7 Things You Should Know About The GOP Party Platform

The Republican party platform is quite scary to a lot of people. In a time where we have many social, economic and political issues, the Republican party has spent a lot of time being regressive. America is at a very delicate crossroads right now. From economics concerns, to a corrupt democratic system, our nation has a lot of problems it will have to face. But how has the GOP decided to deal with these things? Here is a list of seven things the Republican party has planned as shown in there unbinding party platform.

1. Over Turning Marriage equality.

The GOP suggests that marriage equality should be over turned in order to protect “traditional” values of marriage and allow states to keep the standard of “one woman, one man” unions. This will mean that gay marriages can be illegal again, and will therefore deny basic civil rights to members.

2. They declared pornography a public health crisis.

An amendment was successfully purposed in a subcommittee of the platform committee that states “Pornography, with his harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions. We encourage states to continue to fight this public menace and pledge our commitment to children’s safety and well being.”

3. Making no exceptions for women’s health in cases of abortion.

The GOP has taken an extreme position here. They want abortion to be completely illegal. No Exceptions. In case of rape, no exception. In cases of mother’s health, no exception. This is a huge violation of women’s rights.

4. States rights to determine which bathrooms transgender people may be allowed to use.

The party calls on “natural marriage” and states’ rights for determining which bathrooms transgender people may use. They called it “common sense public safety.”

5. They will defend the right of merchants to deny service to gay customers.

The GOP wants a business to be allowed to deny service to gays, lesbians and transgender citizens.

6. Promote Conversion Therapy.

The GOP party platform claims that parents have the right to determine the proper treatment or therapy for their minor children, and offered support for “conversion therapy” for children who identify as LGBT.

7. Build the Mexican U.S border wall.

They want a border wall between our two countries. While there is no mentioning of Mexico paying for it. The GOP is supporting Trumps plan to build his wall. A wall that will cost over 25 billion dollars.

America will experience what will seem like years of regression. The discrimination that many have fought to move America away from, will reemerge and be a more devious force than in the recent pass if the GOP takes power again. The constitution is in jeopardy; you could even say the world is in jeopardy. Don’t just take my word for it. Look at some of the things I have listed and judge them for yourself. Will this really make America great again?

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
