Growing up a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers, I have easily realized that not only is my favorite team unlike any other, but the fans are one of a kind as well. As my dad always emphasized: "There are football fans, and there are Steeler fans." From our extensive knowledge of the history to our traditions other fans would deem "weird," we are truly unlike the rest. Since we are in such a league of our own, here are seven things you'll only understand as a Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
1) The power of the Terrible Towel.
The Terrible towel is Pittsburgh's favorite symbol of pride and power. There's no doubt about it: the legend of the Terrible Towel is real. It curses the opposing team and all who disrespect it.
After all, there IS evidence behind this notion.
Remember T.J. Houshmanzadeh and the Bengals during 2005? The Tennessee Titans in 2008? The Arizona Cardinals (who lost the Super Bowl) in 2009?
Yeah, me neither.
Fun fact: All proceeds made by selling the Terrible Towel go to The Allegheny Valley School for the mentally and physically disabled as requested by the originator, Myron Cope, whose son attended the school.
2) The importance of the "Immaculate Reception."
The "Immaculate Reception" is known as one of the greatest plays in football history. On the last play of the game, Steelers quarterback Terry Bradshaw intends to pass to John Fuqua, but it is deflected off of Jack Tatum of the Oakland Raiders. Right before the ball hits the ground (which would pronounce the play as dead), Franco Harris of the Steelers scoops it up and miraculously runs it in for a touchdown. This play lead the Steelers to the AFC Championship that year. It's practically a holiday in my house.
3) How bad a rivalry can REALLY get.
Whether it's the Bengals, Ravens, or Browns, the rivalries the Steelers have in their division are about more than just football. These teams are especially notorious for going out of their way to disrespect the Steelers. In more recent events, some of the players took to Twitter to trash-talk, leading to the scrum in the video above. Ask any Steeler fan what team they hate the most, I guarantee it'll be one of those three. (Or the New England Patriots, for obvious reasons.)
4) How these four were the toughest men to ever step onto a football field.
Let's take a moment to appreciate Dwight White, Ernie Holmes, L.C. Greenwood, and the legendary "Mean Joe" Green. Known as the "Steel Curtain," these men made the Steeler's defense in the 70's unstoppable. They were a huge contribution to the success the Steelers faced during the decade, leading the team to four Super Bowls.
5) The importance of this place.
This is Three Rivers Stadium, a previous home to both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh's baseball team - the Pirates. This is where all of the history took place, almost every legendary Pittsburgh player having played on this field. It was a place that represented the success of the Steelers, holding the beloved memories of the 70's.
6) How there is only one brand of ketchup.
Since the Steelers now play at Heinz Field, fans everywhere have developed an allegiance to the brand. If it's not Heinz, then it's sacrilege. Enough said.
And most importantly...
7) What it's like to have SIX Super Bowl Rings.
If you weren't sure, or if you just like reminding people as much as possible like I do, the Steelers are the only team in the National Football League that has six Super Bowl Championships: won in the 1974, 1975, 1978, 1979, 2005, and 2008 seasons.
Now, a moment of silence for the 13 teams that have failed to snag just one Super Bowl:
Minnesota Vikings
Buffalo Bills
Cincinnati Bengals
Philadelphia Eagles
San Diego Chargers
Atlanta Falcons
Tennessee Titans
Carolina Panthers
Arizona Cardinals
Cleveland Browns
Detroit Lions
Houston Texans
Jacksonville Jaguars
So, to all of the Steeler fans out there: always remember how lucky we are to be fans of the greatest team in the league.
