Though I don't have children of my own, I am often surrounded by them because I have elementary-aged siblings, and I also work in a daycare. Working with children day in and day out has truly enlightened me, for I honestly believe that these kids know a lot more about the world than I do. Though some can't walk and some can't talk, and others may eat grilled cheese for every meal, these kids have a lot to offer. It's easy to get caught up in your job, social status, the media, etc. But take a moment and embrace the things that you did, loved, and believed in when you were little. The little ones that give me life every day remind me that:
1. Love is meant to be shared
The amount of hugs that I see given on the daily is more than the average adult may give in a lifetime. Monday through Friday I'm with these kids for several hours a day, and without fail, I receive a hug each hour by almost each and every one of them.
2. No matter how you're feeling, greet others like you haven't seen them in ages.
Though you may have just seen them yesterday when they walk through that door be sure to scream their name with the biggest smile on your face that you can. And, of course, hug them the second they've entered the room.
3. You may not want to, but you need to apologize.
Whether you've accidentally hurt someone, or maybe even just scared them with your toy dinosaur, it's important to apologize and show them how much you care.
4. You can have a good day if you let yourself have a good day.
Yeah you may have scraped your knee, or maybe you forgot your blankie at home, but is that really an excuse to walk around pouting all day? Brush it off and remember that you probably have a yummy snack to look forward to after nap.
5. Naps truly are important.
If you're feeling cranky, or like you're not performing at your best, it's okay to take a little cat nap! Chances are, you'll feel a whole lot better when you wake up, and you'll be more productive than if you didn't nap.
6. Sharing really is caring.
Though I may have trouble getting the kids to share that one favorite baby doll, I often catch them trying to share their snacks, blankets, or other toys with each other. And sometimes, they realize that it's more important that their friend is happy, and eventually the favorite baby doll is given with a warm smile.
7. Life is pretty awesome.
Fill the world with smiles, hugs, and laughter, believe in magic, play outside, and find the little kid inside of you who loves unconditionally each and every day. It's the little things.
