This summer gave me some time to think about my first year in college, as well as plan for the year ahead. Taking a step back from everything gave me a chance to better know myself, and this is what I learned over the summer.
1. My major wasn't for me
And neither was my second major. That's okay, though. Figure out where you best belong and work from there.
2. It's okay to take time off
Whether it be from work, school, or even from people. Giving yourself space allows you time to think and focus on yourself, which is needed at times. You are your number one priority, and it's okay to come to the conclusion that you just need to take a break.
3. Time doesn't determine the quality of a friendship
The friendships I made in the past year are some of the best friends I've ever had, even though we've only known each other for a year. Don't equate time and friendship; equate friendship with happiness, trust, and support.
4. Change is okay, even when it's scary
Sometimes you need to take a big leap in order to be happy. It can be scary or even downright terrifying. We've all had times where we were hesitant, and it's okay to acknowledge uncertainty. Things don't work out, but you have to at least test the waters.
5. Being different isn't a bad thing
We hear this a lot, and it seems like something we should know by the time we enter college. Honestly, though, it's hard to stand out from the crowd. It can be hard to speak your mind and set yourself apart from the crowd, or even your friends.
6. Be confident in your thoughts and in yourself
Don't shy away from your own ideas. Don't show away from becoming the best you possible. Speak your mind. Your thoughts and ideas matter. You are an individual and deserve to speak as one.
7. When you're in the right place, you'll know it
There's a certain feeling when you're in the right place, whether it be physical, mental, or even a group of people. Things tend to fall into place whether you realize it or not, and, before you know it, you'll be exactly where you need to be.
