7 Things I Learned During My First College Midterm Week

1) Everyone around you is just as stressed as you are

You probably feel like all the stress in the world is sitting on your shoulders, but honestly, everyone around you is experiencing the same things. We’re all insanely overwhelmed by countless exams, projects, and papers, and can feel the stress eating us alive. Believe me, its not just you.

2) You will spend a lot of money on coffee

I’m pretty sure I made 6 trips to Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts for coffee in a 2-day period. Between staying energized to finish work, and staying awake at late hours to study a little more, coffee is a must. The convenience of Starbucks in Strozier makes it so hard to not be tempted to pack on the caffeine, so be prepared to spend a lot on many much needed coffee breaks.

3) You’ll probably skip a class or two to study for another one

This is especially true on exam day. It’s hard want to focus on other things when an exam is only a few hours away, and a lot of studying can happen in the time of a full class, so skipping class to study happens a lot.

4) You will stress eat, and probably not eat regular meals

As everyone around you is insanely stressed too, you’ll notice that everyone is always eating. You also probably won’t have time to sit down to a normal meal, so Easy Mac in the library or a protein bar on the way to an exam sounds like something to expect.

5) You need to take time for yourself too, though

Yes, studying and making project deadlines is the top goal during midterm week, but its also really important to take time for yourself. This can be by calling home, sleeping a few hours, or listening to some music. Being 100 percent invested in only work is bound to drive you crazy.

6) Make time to see friends

Your friends are all going through the same thing as you, and its tough on everyone. The best way to stay sane during this process is by making time to talk to friends or hang out with them, even for a little bit. This can even be by going to Strozier or Dirac to work on an assignment together or study with each other. The point is, these familiar and comforting faces will make exam week a lot more bearable.

7) You will be insanely happy once its all over

I honestly cannot emphasize this enough, but the relief you feel after that last huge exam that you’ve been studying for days for is indescribable.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
