7 Things I Hope My BF's Mom Knows

From his love to his mom

Those of us who are lucky enough to have snagged the loves of our lives know this; they wouldnā€™t be here without their parents. Not just because of the physical aspect that none of us want to think about, but because their parents, however involved, gave them experiences that shaped them into the humans, the men and women they are today. I personally know that there are a few things I would like to say to my boyfriendā€™s mom, in particular. Iā€™d like to believe that these are fairly universal to most couples.

1. You were not perfect.

No parent is. You tried your hardest and let me tell you, it paid off. I am sure there are things that I donā€™t know about his childhood or you but I know that the product of his childhood, however screw-y, is beautiful. So good work.

2. You were brilliant

To raise someone as smart and thoughtful as your son means you were brilliant, just as brilliant as he is. You were brilliant enough to keep him on the right track, though I am sure he rebelled. You were smart enough to raise him right, and for that, I am grateful.

3. You were a saint

He has his moments of butt-hole-ness, like anyone. But I know he must of caused you some trouble; you mustā€™ve been a saint to deal with an attitude like his. Can you teach me? *laugh*

4. You loved him

I see it in your eyes every time we surprise visit you. I saw it in your eyes when he moved away. I see it every time you say good bye again. You love him unconditionally, which is more than I can say for some mothers.

5. You taught him well

You taught him to open my door and take out the trash. You taught him to talk and walk and laugh and smile. You taught him how to be a human and how to be gentleman. You did well.

6. You made him into a man

You made him into a fine young man that takes care of me and loves me with his entire being. You showed him how to love and how to be loved. You showed him what love and what to do when you have it: hold on for dear life.

7. He loves you

I know it doesnā€™t always feel like it. I know he doesnā€™t always say it. I know he doesnā€™t always show it, but it is true. He loves you just as fiercely as he loves me. He misses you, too. A mother is a boy's first love, after all.

So, overall, thank you. Thank you for being a great mother and raising a beautiful, intelligent, caring, perfect son. Thank you for letting me into your family, and thank you for loving me like a daughter.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichƩs, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And donā€™t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Donā€™t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and youā€™re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. Youā€™re running late because youā€™ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterdayā€™s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
