Two extra days added to the weekend in the middle of October? Yes, it’s fall break. So, now you have to figure out how you’re going to spend this valuable time. Well, obviously you’re going to go home, sleep, and catch up on homework (…maybe). Anything else? Out of ideas? Here are seven things to do over the extended weekend.

Thing #1: BAKE!

Go to your food board on Pinterest, pick a dessert or main dish that tickles your fancy, and make it! Perhaps choose some seasonal goodies (basically anything pumpkin or apple). Be sure to follow the directions carefully. Caution: If the final product turns out fine, you might just want to do it all over again.

Thing #2: READ!

Take some time to relax and read a book. There’s only one rule: Reading for homework does not count! If you’re an avid reader, perhaps you have a stack of books you’ve been meaning to read; choose one of those. If you’re not much of a reader, visit a bookstore or the library.

Thing #3: EXPLORE!

Visit a local state park, go window shopping, or try a new restaurant. Ever been downtown? Have you visited any local historical sites lately? You might even be able to visit another state if you live close enough. There are many things to discover out there; you just have to look closely.

Thing #4: CREATE!

If you have a creative touch, make something! Paint a favorite quote on canvas, learn how to crochet, or write a poem. Need some inspiration? Go outside, re-read your favorite book, or listen to music while creating. Find a way to get those creative juices flowing. You might be able to make some presents for friends or family who have birthdays coming up soon.

Thing #5: HOBBY!

(There’s not a short action verb for when you participate in hobbies; that’s my explanation for the noun among verbs.) Try out a new hobby. I’ve already mentioned painting, crocheting, writing, and reading, but there are several different hobbies you could try out. Collecting things such as stamps, coins, and other items is one hobby you might like. Calligraphy looks really nice if you would be more interested in that. If you have a camera, work on your photography skills. Find an interesting hobby and learn something new!

Thing #6: PLAN!

Have you made your 25-before-25 list yet? It’s a list of twenty-five things to do before you turn twenty-five (like a bucket list without death being the cutoff date). Think of places you would like to visit, sites you want to see, all before you turn twenty-five. The earlier you start, the longer time you will have to complete all twenty-five items.

Thing #7: UNPLUG!

The ultimate thing to do over the break is to unplug from all the chaos that has been looming around you all semester. Need help with that? Step 1: Turn off your cell phone and other media devices. Step 2: Find an activity to do that does not involve a screen. Great! You’re unplugged! Don’t sit idly glued to social media during your free time—do something productive! Take a nice walk and get in some quality relaxation time.

Spend your time wisely. You’ll have to go back to school soon.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
