Hello fellow dance majors. The only people who understand what we go through is us. As a dance major myself, I get these questions from family and friends quite often. Here is a list of just 7 things dance majors are sick of hearing.
What are you going to do with that?
This is definitely the most common one. When oh people hear that you're a dance major, they most likely don't understand all the countless possibilities there are for a career in the dance field. In fact, most people assume we are all hoping to be performing right after we graduate. I myself want to be a physical therapist working exclusively with dancers--bet you never thought of that one.
So like, what classes do you take?
Just because I'm a dance major doesn't mean all I take for classes are technique classes, just like if you're an engineering major you don't just take engineering classes.
What do you mean you take eight classes a semester?
Like I said, I don't just take dance technique classes. There's a lot more to being a dance major, such as kinesiology, anatomy, pedagogy, and many others.
Do you always have those bruises?
Yes, being a dance major comes with a few bumps and bruises along the way--but hey, that's the best part!
Wow, it must be cool to just dance all day!
Yeah, except I don't. I bounce from dance classes to academic classes--so yes, I do look like a hot mess every day in between classes.
Is that even a real major?
No, I just made up my major. Of course it's a real major. And yes, a Bachelor's degree in dance is a legitimate thing. In fact, 308 schools in the US alone offer some sort of dance program, whether it's a major or a minor.
How do you survive?
Good question. There are days when I don't want to get out of bed because I can't move from ballet the day before. But, with the help of some handy Tylenol, ice packs, and my lovely athletic trainer (Amanda, you're a lifesaver)--anything is possible. It's amazing the things you'll do for the things you love.
