This is intended to be a humorous article, because I really, really love my school, and orientation was fabulous.
1. Bell runs: In the warmer months of the year, students can participate in a completely voluntary (often drunken) run from the Wall on the residential side of campus to the bell on the academic side. You will see naked people sprinting. Be prepared.
2. Commons food: First of all, god bless the commons workers because they do their best. Sometimes they try a little too hard, though. Occasionally simple things have hidden surprises. Once I took marinara sauce to find it contained cumin.
3. THE WEATHER: Friends not from the Midwest, the weather here is very unpredictable. The thing I wish I had known is that class will never be cancelled, no matter how much snow has fallen. Bring boots and stay strong.
4. Clubs: Sign up for a lot and go to a lot of meetings initially. However, as the semester progresses, don't feel guilty if you need to drops some. Just don't be a butt about it.
5. Drinking culture: No one forces you to drink or do any substances and it's great. No pressure to do it and no judgement if you don't. Something that's easy to figure out but I wish I had known.
6. Local fare: Cafe Fromage is the best place to get tea and pastries. Bushel and Pecks has a lot of good organic food for a good price, especially on Sundays. Flying Pig has all of your candy and sweet tooth needs. Enjoy.
7. SUNDAY DINNER: Lastly, Sunday dinner is not provided and that gets super annoying sometimes. Find a buddy to cook with, go to one of the aforementioned places, or order a pizza.
Those are a few things that I wish I had known before I arrived at Beloit and I hope it might be able to help an incoming freshperson or two.
