After starting my first year of studying graphic design, I've noticed at some point or another my peers and I have all heard the same things. Whether it's from a family member, a friend, a conversation in class, or even a critique, we have heard it all. Here's a list of things we've heard as art majors:
1. You're studying what?
We all have those family members and friends that don't understand that you can study art and actually have a future with it. People think it's crazy that you can go to school and study something like art. Art doesn't come easily to everyone and there is more to it than just throwing something together and calling it art.
2. What do you plan on doing with that?
I never know how to respond to this question... honestly, what else would I do with this degree? If I'm studying art, I'm most likely going to be creating the art that I'm studying.
3. Wow! I wish that was my homework!
Yeah, it's not as easy as it seems. Drawing and painting can be fun as homework, but traveling with it is probably the most difficult thing. If it's raining, you're screwed. Same thing if it's windy.
4. What even is that?
All I have to say to this is, "it's art," and just walk away.
5. What are you working on now?
Usually too much between personal work and school. I get stressed and overwhelmed when I hear this. I start thinking about what supplies I need to buy, how much it's costing me, and what I need to finish for class along with what I'd like to finish for myself.
6. What type of classes do you take for that?
Every student has to take prerequisite art classes before being able to take classes that are actually based on what they're studying. Oh, and we have to take general Math, English, and Science classes as well within our first two years.
7. I took an art class once.
I never really know what to say to this. I always want to be that sarcastic b**ch that responds with "that's cool." But of course, I'm always nicer than that.
