"I live where you vacation"
This is what I usually think every time I go back to Puerto Rico on Christmas. A couple of weeks away from the snow and the books, to enjoy the beautiful beaches and warm weather.
Then, why did I decide to go to the United States? That's the question everyone asks me and I reply, "for different opportunities that back home I do not have." USA, specifically Iowa, has opened my eyes to realize that I've learned to be thankful for many things.
1. I'm thankful for independence.
Leaving my house at eighteen was not easy, but I learned how to cook and how to do all my things alone. I've learned how to pay bills, do taxes, see how money works and realize how hard you have to work in order to go to that Hawaii vacation.
2. I'm thankful for my College friends.
Meeting people from all over the place made me appreciate different cultures. It's so interesting and fascinating when you meet someone from Ghana, Egypt, and different parts of the world.
I'm grateful since the beginning of my college career for my friends —they have been my backbone. Having Puerto Rican roommates has also helped a lot with my homesickness. Normally, we all know each other (if we go to ISU, come on we don't know your High School buddy) so if you know a Boricua, shout out my name.
3. Studying abroad
This has been the BEST experience I've ever had at Iowa State. I studied abroad for six weeks in Valencia, Spain. Met wonderful people who I get to call friends now and grew stronger as a person. I recommend everyone to go studying abroad — it changes the way you view life.
4. Country music
I have learned to appreciate the music from Iowa. I HATED the country genre back home and once I got here I still did not appreciate it. Eventually, I learned to actually enjoy country music. Every time I listen to it now, it reminds me of good 'Ole Iowa.
5. Seasons
I'm blessed to be in a place where all the seasons can be seen. Walking through campus and watching the trees turn different colors makes me smile. I don't enjoy anything else more than looking at my gorgeous campus. The leaves fall, the snow starts to fall and I also get excited (for some weeks). After some harsh months of Winter, the flowers start blooming once again and everyone seems to be in a happier mood.
6. Sports
I've learned that USA is HUGE in sports. I've become a sport fanatic myself and basketball is the sport I follow the most. I love to go to the games and show my team spirit. Tailgating is something I had never seen before or participated in, but lots of families and friends (including myself) unite to enjoy some barbecue, beers and then watch the Football game. Sports are a big part of my life now.
7. Distance
I've learned that distance makes the miles worth it. It takes time to adjust to not having your family or closest friends around, but the wait is worth it. Nothing better than coming home after so many hours traveling and getting a hug from your family.
