"Dickinson" is a recent historical-dramedy that is very modern and unexpectedly strange. This Apple TV+ show stars big-names Hailee Steinfeld and Toby Huss in the story of famous poet Emily Dickinson. Fortunately for you, this review will contain no spoilers. Expect the unexpected, because you will not be able to predict this beautifully crafted show.
1. "Dickinson" is very modern.
This show isn't your regular historical drama. As someone who struggled through Shakespeare in high school English class, I thoroughly enjoyed the modern aspect of this show. All of the characters use modern slang, which can be somewhat jarring, and Emily, like many of us, has the main focus is challenging gender and social norms.
2. Emily Dickinson is relatable.
Emily's relatability comes from her well-placed snarkiness and relationship with her family. Besides the fact she lives in a modern society, she has many modern opinions about gender and marriage. All of this makes her a fun character to watch on screen.
3. Wiz Khalifa plays Death.
Emily Dickinson's sees her muse, Death, as a man riding in a ghost horse carriage. Wiz Khalifa embodies this unexpected role. The rest of the characters were cast very well. Hailee Steinfeld makes a wonderful, loudspoken Emily Dickinson. Additionally, the rest of her family adds the perfect amount of comedy and seriousness.
4. The soundtrack is incredible.
A modern soundtrack frames "Dickinson" perfectly, matching the show's modern tone. From ASAP Rocky's hip-hop and rap to Billie Eilish's pop, there is a variety of music throughout the show that perfectly fit the loud, outspoken vibe that Emily Dickinson is. My personal favorite songs are Noga Erez's "Off The Radar" and Hailee Steinfeld's "Afterlife," which plays in the season finale.
5. This show is visually stunning.
The font used throughout the show for Emily's poems is a scratchy gold cursive that balances well with the color scheme. Along with that, the settings, costumes, and imagery are very beautiful and meld together well for a show that envelopes the audience in their environment.
6. The love triangle is very, very, unexpected.
The main love triangle is a realistic, unresolved conflict that adds to the plot instead of slowing it down. Emily is in love with her best friend, Sue, who loves both Emily and Emily's brother, Austin. Interestingly enough, this triangle involves secret notes, hot air balloons, and random suitors for Emily Dickinson.
"Dickinson" is one of the best shows I've watched. If you enjoy this genre and the soundtrack, you'll definitely be ready for season 2 of "Dickinson" this January.
