7 "Thank You's" For My Best Friend

Because seven is a lucky number and I'm lucky you're in my life.

Everyone dreams of having those really close friendships, the ones where it’s easy to get along and while there are disagreements every now and then, they are insignificant in the long run. The kind of friendship where you can see each other for a while and then five minutes later you miss them to pieces because you've become a unit and now that tight unit has been split in two.

It takes some people time to find the person to have this type of friendship with. Some find them at the age of eighteen and some find them sooner or later than that, but I firmly believe there is someone out there for everyone meant to be their best friend. Sure, the title of "best friend" is given out fairly often to different people, but I believe that there is only one person that truly fills this role in a person's life.

To my own best friend, my person, my partner-in-crime, I have seven “thank you”s to say because as everyone knows, seven is a lucky number and I am really lucky to have you in my life!

1. Thank you for always having my back.

Whenever there was a situation where something had even the slightest chance of going wrong or turning awkward or into a confrontation, you were always there supporting me in every way. From backing up my ideas to helping me fight my battles, you're always there for me as one of the best supporters I could ask for.

2. Thank you for being a shoulder to lean (or cry) on.

You definitely know by know that there have been moments where I've just wanted to break down and cry when it felt like the weight of the world was on my shoulders, and a few times that's exactly what I did and you were always there letting me do so while trying to make me feel better even as it seemed like everything was falling apart. I can't count the number of times I've texted you feeling stressed or anxious or sad and I remember each and every time you were able to make me laugh by making a joke about whoever or whatever was making me upset or putting the situation into perspective. There will definitely be more times like that because, you know, life is a series of unpredictable ups and downs, but for now thanks for doing that a million and one times already!

3. Thank you for joining and trying new things with me.

From joining new organizations and clubs to going various places together, I don't think I could have done it had it been just me going alone and on my own. You helped me feel comfortable by being a friendly face I already knew and helped me to just be myself in the brand new and admittedly intimidating environment. Of course, we both were interested in the same groups but it helped get us to where we are now since we had each other there!

4. Thank you for always telling me to follow my dreams.

From talking about being a teacher as a result of my tutoring success to going after various positions in other groups and trying hard in class to achieve success, you always support me in anything and help talk through my thought processes about what I want to do. Plus you're always there to celebrate my successes and achievements and honestly, it's the best thing ever to have you by my side in everything I set out to do.

5. Thank you for making me feel brave.

Obviously there are conflicts and disagreements in life and those that leave lasting impressions long after they are done. You know the people who have left these lasting impressions on me, you know what they've done from either me telling you or being there firsthand. You've been there for every single interaction I've had that has left me angry and distrusting of others, and you were there every time when I just had to vent about these people who were just making life obnoxious and were there to say "yeah, they should not have done that. That's ridiculous". Plus, on the days where my old demons came to stare me in the face, you made me feel fearless instead of afraid to face them.

6. Thanks for always listening to me rant and gush about boys.

...and they think we're the confusing ones. How they still think this? I'm still not sure. This is probably the one I need to thank you the most for and I can hear you laughing now because this is just so accurate and such a major part of why we're always laughing together. It's because we're always on the same page in the chapter of "what is happening". You have been there for every single crush I've had for the past two years and I love how half the time when I text you saying "oh God what do I do about this" you're there to help me out and the other half you're like "I have no freaking clue man". I like to think that with my own limited experience but high moral standards I've helped you think things through and talk things out as well because we're both proud hot messes when it comes to this sort of thing! Here's to more helping each other write text messages for the other to send, more helping decode what this could possibly mean in context with this, and more complaining about how complicated this all is!

7. Thank you for being my biggest fan and my number one go-to.

From starting to write my first novel and telling me it's one of the best things you've ever read to cheering me on with whatever I do, you're my very own cheerleader and I like to think I'm the same for you. We have similar goals and we know what to say to get the other back into the swing of things and ready to take on the days ahead to accomplish our goals, no matter the obstacles in our way.

There are likely a billion more things I should thank you for, but I think starting with a lucky seven is a solid number for now. I honestly can't thank you enough for being my friend and I can only hope I'm as great a friend to you as you are to me.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
