Most students hate studying. It gets boring after awhile, and it is very easy to get distracted. As horrible as it seems sometimes, it is still an essential tool. Studying not only improves your grades, but it also improves your understanding of your field. Whether you are studying for an introductory course or advanced nuclear physics, these seven tips will help to retain as much material as possible.

1. Make a game plan.

Figure out what material you want to cover, then set specific days and times to study. Give yourself incentives. For example, if you study calculus for an hour on Monday, treat yourself to something. Small rewards like this will motivate you to study harder.

2. Find some study buddies.

It is easier to tolerate studying when others are doing the same thing. Find friends who are in the same class as you, and get together. This is beneficial because you will keep each other on track, and you can ask each other questions.

3. Utilize your resources.

Do not just use the materials that your professor gives you. Look in other books in the library, or research more about topics online. The internet has many study tools such as flashcards and quizzes that can help you prepare. You might even find answers to questions that have you stumped.

4. Go to tutoring.

If your university has free tutors, take advantage of them. Go to them prepared with things that you are having problems with, and write a list of questions if you have to. They are there to help you.

5. Email your professor.

Sometimes, you might not be able to find the answer to a question even if you use all of your resources. When you are stuck in this situation, contact your professor. Maybe the question was not clearly explained. They will understand, and they want for you to do well.

6. Quiz yourself.

Taking tests is stressful, but it can also help you retain material. Make the questions yourself, use a study guide, or find an online test. Learn from your mistakes, and figure out why you missed the questions that you got wrong. This will help you out in the long run.

7. Don't overdo it.

Everyone has their limits. When you start zoning out and cannot focus on anything, take a break. If you are extremely tired, you might even need to take a nap. It is hard to study when you do not have the right mindset, and being exhausted will not allow you to do your best. Pace yourself.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
