"Splatoon 2" is a sequel to one of Nintendo's greatest multiplayer shooter games, "Splatoon". This fresh new game has more battle stages with a few of the classic ones along with some more advanced weapons like the Dual Squelcher (two mini guns instead of one) and the N-ZAP ’89 (a fancier looking gun). The goal of the main multiplayer game, Tur War, is to "ink" all the turf with your team's ink color. It's competitive nature is the reason why I love playing it and I can say I'm fairly good at it. When I'm playing the game, however, there's always going to be new users who might be overwhelmed by all the crazy shooting that's happening. Therefore, I created this list on some of the unspoken battle strategies all long-time users follow. I hope you find it useful!
1. Ink your team's side first.
This isn't just a thing first-time users do; some of the most aggressive users immediately go straight to the other side. I can see that being a fair strategy but for beginners, it's suicide. Not only that, it's annoying to your other team members to have to ink the remaining turf while you're rebooting; it slows down the process and gives the other team a chance to invade.
So, unless you know what you're doing, ink your base first. It gives your team a solid foundation to escape or heal from the other team's attacks.
2. Whenever going to a new area, bomb it.
So let's say you finished inking your side of the map and are ready to advance to the enemy's base. Whenever you approach a new area with the other team's ink already on it, throw a bomb to ensure you won't be sneak attacked. Keep shooting and throwing bombs until the area is secure.
Remember that your goal is to ink the most turf, not kill the most enemies. So, you want to always be cautious when entering enemy territory.
3. Stay together with your teammates.
I cannot stress this enough, So many people make this mistake. The most successful battles I've had was when everyone was working together as a team, not going off and doing their own thing and fighting for themselves. I think this concept is the reason why "Splatoon" is so enjoyable for gamers. It feels awesome having your team back you up on your advance.
It's good to be confident, but don't get too cocky thinking you can do everything on your own. Stick to at least one other team member and you will have each other's back if one gets splatted on.
4. Communicate with your teammates.
This is kind of the same with staying together with your teammates, but it's equally important to take advantage of the communication options the game gives you. Even though you can't communicate with your teammates via microphone, you can with the arrow control pad.
When you're playing you can say "booyah!" or "this way!" and when you get defeated you can say "ouch...". Taking advantage of the last two can help your teammates know that the base is in danger or you want more support in invading a new area. Remember to use this tactic effectively and wisely; you don't want more of your team members to die along with you.
5. Always have an escape route.
When you suddenly realize that you're not safe on the new turf you just found, you would need an escape route out of there. If you don't create one, you will most likely get cornered until you get splatted on. It's easier said than done, but always having a plan B for when things turn south is essential in surviving.
The other team is not expecting you to have a plan B because they believe they caught you in the act. So in order to change the advantage to your favor, you have to prepare an escape route to give you an advantage. Usually climbing up to the nearest tower is the best way to go.
6. Know your weapons/limitations.
It might be obvious but you'd be surprised how many users don't effectively use their weapons. Take the time to know how you play and what weapon suits your fighting style the best. Then use all your weapon's ability to your advantage and remember to use your bombs and special skills during combat.
Let's say you're not much of a shooter and prefer a close combat weapon than a gun. Choose a roller or a paint brush as your weapon and use your overly powered roller/brush to sneak attack people. Know your limits; don't try to take out shooters from a distance even if it's a close distance because shooters always win that battle.
7. If the other team keeps invading your base, go into theirs.
In the scenario where your team keeps getting backed up by the other team and time is running out, the best thing to do is to find a way around to their base. Most likely all of the members of the other team will be too focused trying to ink your base to notice anyone trying to sneak around theirs. You must go with someone though in order for this plan to work. It will be a lot of turf with little time to spare; it's too much for one inkling to handle.
Once you receive a lot of points from all the turf you ink, you can activate your special attack to further your invasion and splat anyone who might try to stop you.
