New England, Weather, Unexpectedness... need I say more?

Living in New England it is very obvious that with each winter that comes, there will be some form of "What the f&(#?!" coming from everyone's mouths. Whether it be discussing the fact that up until certain points, there really hasn't been snow all winter, or the fact that once it does finally come down, it's the snow that comes for days. Like, when we think there has finally been enough...SURPRISE. This is something we're all used to, as long as you have lived in NE, you know that the winters are always up in the air.

What is the worst about snow days? It usually snows on THE WEEKEND. Couldn't you wait until the weekday to get me out of my usual 9-5? Thanks, snow.

But, alas, living in NE, you just love what "snow" comes, and enjoy every last bit. We are lucky enough to live in areas where we can do many snow activities during the snow days.

Usually, this is how a snow day in NE goes...

1. After frequently checking the severity of the snow that is predicted to fall, we make preparations. Y'know, milk and bread! Make sure schools canceled, check. Called into work? Check. Put up your windshield wipers? Check. Let's do this.

2. Wake up, see the winter wonderland... first step in motion? Sleep in! Ugh, doesn't that feel good? Gather all the blankets in the house and pile up on the couch. Don't forget the hot cocoa or the coffee.

3. After relaxing and being snuggled up, you decide to be productive. Maybe read? Maybe bake? Clean up the house while you have time. An hour goes by, you're ready to put the TV back on.

4. Along with being productive by baking, you'll probably be doing A LOT of snacking. Chips, cookies, ice cream, anything junk you can think of- you probably have it stored up next to the milk and bread. Speaking of that- do you ever even utilize the milk and bread?

5. The snow is the perfect combination of powdery and moldable. You decide to throw on the comfiest, warmest layers and head on out. Snow angels, snowball fights, sledding down makeshift ramps and the steepest of hills, wind chilled faces- you decide maybe it is better to be inside.

6. So the day off has been spent relaxing and trying to be productive for some part of the day. But, mostly relaxing and mostly eating terrible foods. Is it worth it? You betcha. The night is winding down. You realize the roads are plowed, the snow is stopping, guess what? Work is back in order tomorrow. Business as usual, too bad, so sad. You know what you gotta do now? Go clear off that car, go shovel yourself out and lose traction as you try so hard to get it out of that dip you buried your tires in. Make sure you remember to wear gloves!

7. The snow day is over. You're ready for bed although you've taken 30 naps throughout the day. It's always the perfect day off for catching up with things within the house, tying loose ends with bills, or finishing up work that has been pushed aside. But the last stage of a snow day? Check the weather app and see the predictions of an even bigger storm coming later this week. The last stage is to repeat, go grab your milk and bread!

Don't forget, always embrace the snow days. Thank you, mother nature!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
