7 Things Sorority Girls Are Tired Of Hearing

I have only been in a sorority for half of a semester so far. Since I have joined I have encountered people being positive about me being in a sorority as well as negative. I knew there were stereotypes in movies but I never knew that some people actually believed them. I am continuing to hear some of the same things over and over again and it is starting to get really frustrated, as well as sometimes hurtful. So here are seven things that sorority girls are tired of hearing.

So you buy your friends?

Yes, I understand it does seem like we are paying a ton of money to have friends, but you should ask what the money goes to. The money we pay for go towards sisterhood retreats, charities, t shirts, and other fun and community organizations we are involved.

I'm guessing mommy and daddy pay for everything.

Just because we are in a sorority does not mean our parents pay for everything. Not all of us have our parents pay for our dues. Some of us have jobs and pay our dues each semester all on our own.

I would never waste my money on joining a sorority.

Being in a sorority is never a waste of money. This is something that you continue to be with you for the rest of your life. Also a plus is that when you graduate college, job opportunities will be easier for you. Employers like knowing that you were in a sorority, because they know how committed and hardworking you are.

I could never be in a sorority.

Have you ever stopped to think that the stereotypes aren't true. Every sorority is different but I promise we are not like the movies. We all love each other no matter what life throws at us. You have sisters that will drop whatever they are doing just to be by your side. You even get to meet different chapters on other campuses and meet even more of your sisters. These girls are going to be with you for the rest of your life.

Do you all go off and party every weekend?

No. We do not go off every weekend, hook up with guys and get drunk. Most of our weekends actually consist of sleepovers and lots of junk food.

Your sorority is filled with preppy, spoiled, rich girls.

Just because we are in a sorority, does not mean we are spoiled, rich, or preppy. Anybody can be in a sorority. You have many different types of personalities in a sorority. Everybody is different.

Are you all just one big clique.

Believe it or not we have other friends to. Yes we are with each other a lot, but we also make time for our other friends to. Just because we are in a sorority does not mean we are going to stop being friends with other people who are not in a sorority.

Were you hazed?

No.We do not haze. Hazing is a big deal in sororities and fraternities. We would never treat people with disrespect in order to join. Hazing is a big no no.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
