Like a lot of other people, music is an important part of who I am. I find myself drawn to songs whose lyrics I can identify with, whose lyrics describe what I'm feeling and my current situation. Since life is constantly changing, and so is my situation and feelings I move away from songs quickly, and find myself drawn into different ones. Without fail though, the songs I always find myself coming back to though are the ones I associate with memories; I hold those songs close to my heart. This is a list of some of them.
1. The Little Mermaid Soundtrack- Under the Sea
Since coming to college I've made two very close friends- my roommate, and a girl who lives about three doors down. The three of us are like a trio and spend a lot of time together. One night when we all got back from winter break we were in my room blasting music from my roommate's speaker. Whenever we listen to music together we always gravitate towards Disney soundtracks.
"Under the Sea" came on and we all started jumping around the room singing laughing. My roommate and I grabbed our safety goggles for lab and put them on, pretending that they were dive masks. We danced while mimicking swim movements, and pretending like we were sinking underwater.
The whole thing was just filled with endless bouts of laughter. The best part about it was the RA on duty had to come knock at our door and tell us we were being too loud. It was definitely worth it.
2. Joe Nichols- Brokenheartsville
My dad has always supported me and my archery endeavors. He would take me out to the range and spend hours shooting with me, or even just sitting there watching me practice. So, when I told him I wanted to go hunting he supported me wholeheartedly and found a way to make it happen.
The afternoon following my second hunting outing I left really disappointed because my kill had gotten away from us after three hours of trying to follow its blood trail and we were unable to track it down. On our way back home we decided to pull into a Cracker Barrel to grab some breakfast so we weren't driving on empty stomachs. For the road trip, my dad had made a CD with a bunch of country songs, one of which was "Brokenheartsville".
As we pulled in to the Cracker Barrel parking lot this song was playing, and I heard the line I think the devil drives a Coup de Ville, I watched them drive away over the hill" and I started laughing. I turned to my dad and told him, "The devil doesn't ride a Coup de Ville, he has two tusks and runs on four legs underneath the brush." We both just started laughing before we went in and got breakfast.
I still remember my order from that morning- eggs-in-the-basket with bacon, and hashbrown casserole, and a glass of orange juice.
3. Of Monsters and Men- Little Talks

When I was a sophomore in high school my brother was a senior. Most of the time when we were in the car together we drove in silence, and I would just look at his radio. The radio lit up and was set to change colors. I remember just sitting there staring at it one night while we were driving back home from a sports event, then "Little Talks" came on.
I had always loved the song so I started mouthing the words to it, not wanting to sing out loud and annoy my brother. Only a few seconds into the song though, he started singing, and he never sings. So naturally I took that as a sign that it was ok if I sung along too. So for three minutes the car wasn't just awkward silence, I felt like I was connecting with my brother in a way I didn't usually get to.
4. The Greatest Showman Soundtrack- From Now On
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017) | Full Movie Trailer
Since my best friend from back home and I had watched The Greatest Showman, the movie's soundtrack had become the playlist to our friendship. Whenever we got together we ended up scream-singing the lyrics to the songs; it didn't matter the time of day.
The one that sticks out to me most was towards the end of my senior year. It was around 2 a.m. and we were driving back to my house with IHOP. We had just left a midnight showing of The Rocky Picture Horror Show that we had somehow convinced our parents to let us go out and see. We drove down the highway with our windows down, music blaring as we sang our hearts out to "From Now On".
When we did this I was going through a hard time in my life and it was this moment that made me finally feel like everything was okay, and I remembered how to actually smile and not feel like I was drowning under the weight of the world.
5. Never Shout Never- Cheatercheaterbestfriendeater

When I first found "cheatercheaterbestfriendeater" it was the summer when I was 13. My cousin had come down to Florida from New Hampshire and she was staying for a few weeks with my family and I. That entire trip my cousin and I played Nintendogs and Pokemon on our D.S. without a care in the world. We wrote stories together and created characters that we could roleplay with. We ran out in the backyard with our stuffed animals and created our own imaginary worlds.
We had no cares and no worries, and it "cheatercheaterbestfriendeater" was our soundtrack. We would belt out singing it, laughing because of the lyrics. I no longer speak to that cousin, but now every time I listen to it I'm taken back to those long days and late summer nights.
6. Gregory and the Hawk- Boats and Birds
Boats & Birds- Gregory & the Hawk
The first dog I ever owned was a retired police dog named Chase. He was a large Belgian Malinois that used to work as a bomb detection dog. He was very good at what he did but retired early due to having a seizure during training one day; he ended up joining our family afterward.
Chase was always happy-go-lucky and was the perfect dog. The one thing that scared him though was the loud noises produced by thunder and fireworks. Whenever he heard one of those sounds he'd begin anxiously pacing throughout the house and almost nothing could get him to calm down. The one thing that could get him to calm down though was walking into my room, jumping up on my bed, and cuddling with me as I sang him "Boats and Birds".
We had to put him down two years ago, but to this day whenever I hear this song I feel like I have him at my side, curled up next to me as I helped him calm down.
7. Keith Urban- Cop Car
When I got my first boyfriend in high school I was young, dumb, and naive. My parents didn't like the boy much but being the little rebel that I was I would sneak out of my house and walk a few miles across town to see him. I was convinced that things would work out with him, and that they were wrong.
One day when I had snuck out to see him, he and I walked up to the top of a parking garage that was near his house. The sun was setting, and there wasn't a single car on the top floor. We sat there talking, and I showed him "Cop Car". About halfway through the song he stood up and offered his hand.
"Dance with me," is what he said to me.
It was straight out of a movie scene. It was cliche, but endearing all the same. It's been four years since that and I still remember that evening and remember it every time I listen to this song, even when I haven't given that memory a single thought in ages.
