Considering that we are now breaching the burnout phase in school where the once exuberant gym-goers are now rendered complacent, here is some motivation to get you back out there and capitalize on the benefits you are missing out on by skipping that morning workout.
1. Alone Time
Granted, some people love to constantly run their mouth whilst lifting. However, for those that are like me, the gym can be a wonderful place for putting your headphones in, and silencing all other distractions that life seems to be constantly throwing your way.
2. Stress Relief
A more stressful day is corollary to a more rewarding and enjoyable workout. Most college students opt to skip the gym because there are too many stressors in their life, and they would rather unwind playing Xbox or watching Netflix. Numerous studies have iterated that regular, consistent exercise leads to decreased tension, stabilized mood, and increased well-being.
3. Combats Insomnia
Another excuse used for skipping the gym is that they need to catch up on their sleep. However, research shows that exercise does not only increase ease of falling asleep due to the body's perceived fatigue, but it also increased overall sleep quality due to more time spent in REM sleep. Therefore, waking up 30 minutes early every day for exercising will actually yield better sleep results than hitting that snooze button to skip the gym.
4. Increased Confidence
Confidence in the gym translates into improved confidence in all aspects of your life. Due to the sense of achievement one feels after exercising, improved physical appearance, competitive nature, and change of mindset (where you feel like an "alpha" conquering a new personal record), you simply cannot ignore the fact that working out increases your whole outlook on life.
5. Improves Brain Function
Physical activity helps boost blood flow throughout the body–including the brain. This causes brain cells to become better at connecting with one another. According to a study conducted at the University of North Texas, "Cardiorespiratory fitness was the only factor that we consistently found to have an impact on both boys’ and girls’ grades on reading and math tests. This provides more evidence that schools need to re-examine any policies that have limited students’ involvement in physical education classes."
6. Energy Booster
Engaging in regular exercise, both aerobic and anaerobic, can increase sustained energy levels, and prolong the amount of time before fatigue sets in. A study conducted by the New York Times discovered that, with no exceptions, individuals who exercise regularly have much higher energy levels than their sedentary counterparts. The study divulged that both of the exercise groups they proctored had a 20 percent increase in energy levels over the sedentary control group.
7. Health & Wellness
Had to save the most obvious and efficacious benefit for last. Seriously, I could make a 500 bullet point list as to the overall health benefits exercising has for the body. It increases longevity, fortifies the immune system, controls weight through boosting the immune system, helps you achieve your desired physique, it strengthens bones and joints, and the list goes on....
So, get up from your seat, find something active that you enjoy to do, and start reaping these immense benefits!
