My favorite thing about being a young adult in 2015 would have to be...Netflix. Well, you know, aside from freedom, college, and Chris Hemsworth. Anyway, Netflix is the crown jewel of our time and it's imperative that we utilize it well.
I'm here today to take you on a journey that will change your binge-watching experience for the better. I'm here to tell you about the greatest show of all time and the show that has incidentally become the center of all of my jokes: "The Office."
From the clever writing to the great cast, "The Office" has proved to be one of the funniest comedy series out there. Here are seven reasons why you should put down that croissant and open up your laptop to your account and start watching.
1. It will make you laugh.
OK, obviously this was a given seeing as this show is a comedy, but I'm not exaggerating when I say that it will make you laugh out loud consistently. For all nine seasons. The characters are so unique and have very specific quirks that you will fall in love with/ find to be absolutely hysterical. The other night I had to pause the show because I was laughing so hard that tears were rolling down my face and I couldn't see the screen anymore.
2. It will make you cry.
"The Office" is more than just funny jokes and awkward scenarios, it follows the lives of lovable characters through an honest and candid lens. You get to know each of them on such a different level that when you're done watching an episode, you feel almost as if you're saying goodbye to good friends. You learn to love their misdemeanors and you will revel in their subtle love stories. Whether it's a happy cry, a sad cry, or a frustrated cry, I can promise you that tears will soak your blanket at some point throughout the series. If you don't look like Kim Kardashian's crying face when you watch the series finale, then you're doing something wrong. Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster.
3. Michael Scott
Any Steve Carell fans out there? Well, you're in luck because this is one of his best, and most iconic roles. Steve plays Michael Scott who is the regional manager of Dunder Mifflin (a struggling paper business) and, to put it lightly, he's a complete idiot. His character is so unique -- I can guarantee you've never seen anything like him. He's unbelievably embarrassing and you'll spend most of the episode cringing at his idiotic decisions. But at the end of the day, you have a fondness for him and you love him so much. You're always on Team Scott, no matter what ridiculous act he pulls.
4. The episodes are so short!
Seriously, they're like, 22 minutes each. You don't have to sit down and commit to an hour long nail-biter, you just get to experience pure happiness for about 20 minutes. Not to mention this makes binge watching even more acceptable. Need a study break? Watch an episode of "The Office!" Want to avoid responsibilities? Watch an episode of "The Office!" What I'm really trying to tell you is just watch the first episode and you'll be hooked. It will be the best 22-ish minutes of your life.
5. Jim and Pam
If you know me, you know that my love for Jim Halpert (played by John Krasinski) is deeper than the Earth's crust. And the only thing deeper than my love for Jim is my love for Jim and Pam together. I have to admit that Jim and Pam have redefined relationships goals and their love story will have you sitting on the edge of your seat in every episode. Even though I'm rewatching the series for the hundredth time, I still make guttural noises when they share their first kiss. Their love is so authentic and real and extremely different from any other couples portrayed on television. If you are sad, lonely, and single, proceed with caution. If you're already in a happy, committed relationship, prepare for it to be derailed. Jim and Pam trump any expectation you have of love.
6. Ad lib!
Every single episode I watch I always catch myself saying, "How did they come up with this stuff? It's so funny!" Well, after watching a lot of interviews and reading about the show, it turns out that a lot of lines and scenes were actually ad-libbed! So basically really funny moments or iconic scenes could either be perfectly scripted or just a product of good humor. Steve Carell especially would ad lib many of his scenes which makes his character, Michael, so funny and unpredictable. When you watch an episode, try and see if you can tell if something was scripted or not. You probably won't be able to tell, and that, my friends, makes this show one of the best ones out there.
7. The writers double as actors.
I'm not just telling you to watch "The Office" because it's quirky and funny, I want you to watch it because it displays some of the most talented writers out there. There are a multitude of characters on the show who not only act, but write the show themselves. Some even act, write, AND direct the series. Everyone in the cast is incredibly convincing and believable in their roles which makes the show seem so close to reality. Whenever Kelly tells a long winded story about the dress she just bought, knowing that Mindy Kaling is behind those lines makes the scenes even more enjoyable. Long story short, the cast is amazing.
I know what you're thinking: "The Office" is just a television show, what's the big deal? The big deal is that it encompasses so many aspects of comedy and good television that it far surpasses most shows today.
Through the quick wit, charming characters, and unpredictability, this show will have you planted on your couch for days on end just to see what shenanigans the characters will be up to next.
Next time you have an hour to yourself, don't even bother looking through the 'Recently Added' Netflix section. Do yourself a favor and start "The Office."
You'll love it and will be left begging for more. (That's what she said.)
