I've been studying the Spanish language for about 6 years now, and since I recently declared it as my minor, I thought I would share some things that all Spanish majors and minors know to be true.
1. You have the Word Reference app on your phone
I use Word Reference every single day because I never remember how to spell certain things and there are SO many ways to conjugate verbs that sometimes I forget how to conjugate some of the verbs.
2. People with bad accents bother you
I know that sometimes its hard to pronounce some words, but we've all been studying this for a while now and should know how to authentically pronounce sentences.
3. You're convinced that you know the preterite versus imperfect, but you always get something wrong
Actions that are in progress in the past are always imperfect....right?
4. When you write an essay en español y en inglés
I cannot tell you how many times I have been rereading my essays only to find that I have written part of it in Spanish. At least my tired brain can speak two langues pretty well! Spanglish is my favorite.
5. When you can't think of the proper English word, so you say it in Spanish
Sometimes I will be talking to my friends and I can't remember what the correct word is, so I say it in Spanish. Also, when I am talking to my friends, my brain just tells me the Spanish words before the English words so I think in Spanish and translate it to English. It's actually kind of cool.
6. You think in Spanish
I do this a lot too. It kind of just happens. All of a sudden you realize that you are thinking in Spanish and not in English.
7. You cannot wait to study abroad
We all need that immersion credit and I cannot wait until I get to immerse myself into the culture and become fluent in Spanish!
There are many other reasons when I think to myself, wow, I really am a Spanish minor, but these are some of the top reasons why I know I'm doing the right thing.
