This week has been rough for me. I came down with the flu for the first time while being in college, and let's just say that it was less than enjoyable. Being sick is never fun, but being sick away from home and in another state is a lot harder than I was expecting it to be. Here's a list of things you might not expect to happen when being sick in the dorms at college, and why it actually is the worst.
1. Having to adjust back to your daily routine
Being sick for a few days totally interferes with your daily routine. Having to wake up early again for classes, eat three meals a day, take a shower... it can be a lot to adapt to after being unable to leave your dorm room for three days straight.
2. Having a roommate
Not only does your roommate not want to get sick, but you always feel guilty if they do catch whatever you have. It can be a little awkward being sick while having to share a room with someone.
3. Spreading germs
Living in a dorm means you live close to a lot of other people. It is very easy to spread germs once one person gets sick which. Always remember to disinfect your room and commonly touched surfaces!
4. Not having your mom to take care of you
When I still lived at home, I used to love when my mom would make me food and check up on me when I was sick. But now that I'm in college, I have to take care of myself which honestly was a little scary at first.
5. Your social life is put on hold
Everybody hates being left out, and especially when you are forced to miss out due to illness. You can hear all of your friends laughing and listening to mystic next door while you feel as if you are on your death bed.
6. Having to share a bathroom
Okay. Let's be honest. Having the flu and sharing a communal bathroom with a floor full of girls can be pretty embarrassing and uncomfortable. At home, you get the privacy of your own bathroom that you actually know is clean.
7. Missing class
Missing school in high school because you were sick didn't matter that much. College professors begin to lower your grade if you miss too many classes, and hardly any of them will tell you what you missed while you were sick.
