Recently, I decided to do a little personal experiment and see if I could go a week without wearing a bra. I succeeded. Consequently, however, I now find myself unable to go back to wearing them. There are just so many great things about bralessness!
1. Bras are uncomfortable.
The lace is itchy, the bands dig into my ribs, the wires are pokey, and there's always a tag somewhere that I forgot to cut off. I know some people feel more comfortable wearing them, and I completely respect that, but for me they're boob prisons.
2. Going without gives you a sense of freedom.
Escaping the aforementioned boob prisons is a very liberating sensation. Set your body free!
3. You can wear backless tops.
Without straps and clasps in the way, you can wear just about anything. You never have to worry about strapless bras that never stay up, or whether or not your bra matches your shirt, because you don't have one on at all! Even if a shirt is a bit too see-through, you can just layer a camisole underneath.
4. It's not as noticeable as you would think.
Through strategic layering and hair placement, it's pretty easy to cover anything up that you're uncomfortable showing. Although, to be honest, I've stopped caring too much about that.
5. Bras are expensive.
Think of all the money you'll save on those $60 or more Victoria's Secret bras! It might be good to keep one or two on hand just in case, but if you hardly ever wear them, you won't have to buy new ones nearly as often.
6. Apparently, it's "uplifting."
According to recent studies, people who don't wear bras have perkier breasts in the long run. Sounds good to me!
7. It makes a statement.
To me, not wearing a bra means not forcing myself to wear something that I don't want to wear just because society says I should. The hyper-sexualization that women face makes it "unacceptable" for a woman's body to show through her clothes. This is my stand against that. It's MY body, and how I dress it concerns nobody but me.
In the long run, I discovered that going braless is what makes me feel free and comfortable. This particular approach doesn't work for everyone, but the point is to find what makes you feel that freedom. Wear the things that make you happy and comfortable, and don't wear the things that don't. At the end of the day, it's your choice and yours alone. Be free!
