"Home is where the heart is." A very cliché statement that we've all heard before, right? But what about the movie, Where The Heart Is... not many of us have probably hear of it before. It's one of those feel good movies that you sort of just want to put on repeat, but you can also only watch it once because of the emotions that it evokes whenever you watch it. It's a very moving movie, and it's also rather humorous. But while it provides some laughs, I noticed now that I'm older that it also provides us with some great life lessons. We should all watch Where The Heart Is, and here's a few reasons why...
1. It teaches us that we are capable of anything
At the beginning of the movie the main character, Novalee Nation, is portrayed as a young pregnant teen. After being abandoned at a Wal-Mart in the middle of nowhere she's left to fend for herself with no phone and no money, all while being on the verge of popping out a lil' human being. After her baby is born, she has nowhere to go, but she somehow finds the strength to keep going. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just sum it up by saying that she experiences more hardships, but she still finds a way to smile.
2. It helps us remember that there are good people in this world
So many of the characters that we meet throughout this movie not only help Novalee but they embrace her entirely and let her into their lives. One of these characters is Thelma Husband, who mistakes Novalee for someone else at Wal-Mart, and in doing so, she might as well have saved the girls life.
3. We all need a Sister Husband in our lives
One of my favorite characters from this movie is Thelma 'Sister' Husband. I would just simply call her Thelma, but I think we can all agree that Sister Husband is a lot more fun to say. In my opinion, she really ties this whole movie together by bringing in a sense of humor but also by being the strong woman that all women should strive to be like. Take this quote from her, for example, "Oh, well, a little weight on a woman is no harm." I think we all need a woman like this in our lives, and that someday we should be that kind of woman for a young girl who used to be in the same boat we were.
4. It shows us what real friendship looks like
When Novalee is in the hospital she meets a nurse name Lexie who eventually becomes her best friend. Lexie didn't pry information out of Novalee, she just accepted her for who she was and I think that that is an example of real friendship; not holding someone's past against them and just being friends with them for who they are. Throughout the movie they both run into hardships but I noticed that no matter what the situation was that they always had each others backs.
5. It helps us realize what we deserve
Do you deserve a superficial relationship with a guy who leaves you stranded at a Wal-Mart? No. H*ll to the no. You deserve the guy that adores the way that you smile, who helps you with the things you struggle with, and who encourages you every day. This movie makes this as plain as day.
6. It helps us remember that we can't always trust the people that we wish we could
This can be a really difficult thing to keep in mind, especially in certain situations, and I think that this movie does an excellent job of portraying that struggle. There are a few examples to take from the movie on this subject.
7. It reminds us that true love waits
This movie is a helpful reminder that not every relationship works, and that we go through those relationships to realize what it is that we really deserve. Sometimes waiting it out helps us see what it is that really means something to us. Where The Heart Is really does show us that true love waits.
"Home is where your history begins. Home is where they catch you when you fall." ~Sister Husband
