The other day I did some shopping in the men’s section of Express. I bought ten shirts in total. One was for my boyfriend and the other nine were for me. Yep, I wear boy’s clothes and I’m proud. Now I don’t know exactly what that makes me, but what I do know is I feel more comfortable and confident.
I started cross dressing when my boyfriend began leaving his clothes in my dorm room. I loved everything about his clothes, the style, the cut and the texture. Luckily, my man didn’t mind me snagging his style, but eventually I decided it was time for me to buy my own “boy” clothes. The more I wear men’s clothing the more it makes sense to me that they are awesome. Here are the top 7 reasons to wear men’s clothing:
1. Men’s clothes tend to be cheaper.
The pink tax is very real and is exemplified in drug stores where razors and other products are more expensive for women. The same razor is a higher price because it is pink and appeals to the female consumer. It is not much different in the fashion world as women's clothing tends to be more expensive than men's.
2. Men’s clothes are more comfortable.
Women's clothes are generally tighter, more skimpy and designed to highlight a women's features. Men's shirts are basically built for comfort with larger sizes and softer textures.
3. Men’s clothes cover more of you.
Men's shirts are bigger and cut differently. Buying boy shirts means getting your money's worth. Girl shirts are tighter and made with less material so technically you are paying more for less.
4. Men’s clothes are stylish.
Unfortunately the majority of male clothes are nothing glittery or glamours, but that doesn't mean they are not still stylish. I've gotten many compliments when I wear my boy shirts, most people don't even realize I'm wearing a boy's shirt.
5. Men’s clothes can be worn with anything.
A "boy shirt" can be dressed up with leggings and jewelry or dressed down with jeans and sneakers. More opportunities to wear the shirt means you are getting more wears out of the shirt and therefore more for your money.
6. Men’s clothes draw less attention to yourself.
Some women love walking down the street and being whistled at, but sexual harassment is not really my style. Unfortunately, part of being a woman means dealing with creeps no matter where you go or what you are wearing. However, boy shirts tend to be less bright and flashy and therefore draw less attention.
7. Men’s clothes can be lent to anyone.
Since men's clothing can be worn for anything they can also be lent to virtually anyone, male or female. Once again, you get more uses out of them.
I'm not recommending that everyone stop wearing mini skirts altogether, but I am trying to open everyone's eyes to how our consumer society works and the standards of beauty placed on women. Women are paying more for less in clothing stores and department stores. Women are expected to wear flashy, tight clothing. Enough is enough. My advice is to buy clothes that you like, that are comfortable and affordable no matter what section they are from. Embrace your own style, not the style that society conditions you to have.
