7 Reasons To Love (Or Hate) Thanksgiving

I love Thanksgiving, but not all of us do.

7 Reasons To Love (Or Hate) Thanksgiving

Oh, the holidays. Looks like the season really is upon us and it goes so quickly after All Hallows Eve.

There are several reasons to be thankful this year and I am sure for a lot of us, there are several reasons to not be as well. As we try and count our blessings... sometimes we all need reminders of why Thanksgiving is a special day.

Sure, there is a feast, for most of us. Whether we choose to partake in that or not, here are seven reasons to love the traditional holiday!

1. Thanksgiving represents a part of history.

If you are feeling nostalgic; do some researching. Rather than starting wine and football early, dive into the facts and learn something you didn’t know before. Our country and our families are enough reason to love this holiday, even if we cannot always spend it together.

2. Football

For those who do not like the sport, this is probably the one day you will socialize and watch the game on TV.

3. The drinking

(Insert hair flip emoji.) Some of us nondrinkers wish we drank on this day but if there is a time to cook and drink, this is the day.

4. Some people do not cook.

Now, some people do not cook. They just don’t — tons of people wish their families could respect that. Nonetheless, we can be the clean up crew. We can try to clean up the mess. If you make us cook, this is the day to learn... and if it turns out bad, it turns out bad. This reason is good because after you attempt to cook for them… you’ll never be asked to cook another plate on Thanksgiving again. We all are good at particular things… let’s highlight the positives!

5. The drama

Whether you like to admit it or not, the drama makes Thanksgiving worth remembering. If you are in one of those families that do not bicker on this day.... you are very blessed. Some of us, when we all come together, bump heads. It certainly is not funny at the current time but years down the road.... it's a little funny. It made for a heck of a story.

6. SHOPPING!

I mean, some of us are not Black Friday shoppers because maybe we are Cyber Monday people. Maybe some of us do not care but I for one, love watching people go crazy over the sales. I like partaking in it for the entertainment really. I do not always go. I love spending the time at home... being thankful. Now and again, it is fun to see the specials the stores have and get in the holiday spirit, as long as you are not at one of the stores with door busters.

7. Regardless of all the reasons: There is family.

Sometimes you are in a situation where you have to spend the holiday alone, or choose to. In the end, those of us that can spend the holiday with family, it is a blessing to have them there. In the end, we are all family!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
