7 Reasons To Thank Your Big Brother

Dear Big Bro,

We have had our fair share of ups and downs over the years, but I wouldn't change a thing. Growing up with you as my big brother is one of my greatest blessings. I grew up with you annoying me because there was nothing better for you to do, and I know that I annoyed you too. However, growing up with a big brother also meant that I had a constant companion in life and someone who I knew would always be there for me. I will never be able to put into words how much I love you or how much you mean to me, but here are a few reasons to thank you for everything you've done the past 22 years.

Thank you for being protective.

When we were little, you could pick on me as much as you wanted, but the moment someone else did you made sure to let him know you were the only one who could do that. You were always checking on me and making sure I was okay. People always talk about how a mother lion protects her cub, but she has nothing on a brother protecting his little sister.

Thank you for personifying what I want in a man.

You treated Mom and me with respect and showed me how I deserved to be treated by a guy. And you made sure to make it known when you thought I wasn't being treated fairly. You are kind, loving, funny, and you will do anything to make sure I am happy.

Thank you for always having my back.

You always kept my secrets and vice versa. I knew that I could always count on you. When things got hard, you were the person I wanted to talk to. When life got hard, you let me hang out with all of your friends. I mean what 8th grader wants his little sister, who is in 3rd grade, to hang out with him and his friends? But you didn't care, you included me and made sure I felt loved.

Thank you for my love of sports.

I always wanted to be just like you, so I wanted to play all the sports you did. I never thought I would say this, but thank you for stealing the remote and forcing me to watch ESPN. I can now carry on a conversation about sports and know what I am talking about.

Thank you for letting me steal your hoodies

This may seem minuscule, but this is one of my favorite things about having a big brother. I may not have had a big sister to borrow clothes from, but in my eyes having you to steal your old hoodies and sweatpants was even better.

Thank you for being you.

You have taught me so much. You never give up on your dreams, and you fight for what you believe in. I could not be prouder to be your little sister. I look back on the past 22 years and most of my favorite memories include you.

Thank you for being my best friend.

We are older and going in different directions in life, but I know you will always be there for me. You were my first best friend, and you will continue to be for the rest of my life.

This list could really go on a lot longer, but I guess I will sum it up by saying even though she denies it, I know why you are the favorite child because you are my favorite too.

Love,

You Lil' Sis

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
