Jan. 2, 2016 is marked as a day to remember, acting as the sweetest ending to a roller coaster of a football season. From injuries to close calls to arrests, the Frogs have taken on the season with grace and passion. It hasn’t always been easy, but the team has always had heart.
Dubbed one of the greatest college football comebacks, the TCU v. Oregon Alamo Bowl was a game for the history books. Down 0-31 at halftime, the Frogs scrambled to fight without the skill of beloved quarterback Trevone Boykin, after returning home for being arrested in San Antonio. But, as the world witnessed, a team does not depend on one man, and a halftime score certainly doesn’t determine the outcome. The frogs came back to win 41-47.
Here are the top seven reasons we’ll never forget the Alamo Bowl:
- Overcoming as the underdog. Fans’ hopes dropped after the loss of Boykin, predicting a game loss as well. Some may even say TCU was suddenly the “under-Frog," but the title was taken with a grain of salt.
- Kohlausen. Bram is the true hero, stepping up at a time when the odds were clearly against him and his team. Thanks, Bram, for leading the team with guts and character.
- Triple overtime. If one overtime is enough to skyrocket anyone’s blood pressure, imagine the effect of THREE overtimes. Yet, the Frogs fought until the end. Finally, one of the bowl games this year added interest.
- TCU's fans. We may be small, but we sure are mighty. In San Antonio and around the world, bleeding purple is contagious.
- Perseverance. Yes, the bowl game win is a “feel-good” story, but it wasn’t all fun and games up to that point. Refraining from giving up and giving in was a mantra of the bowl game and season as a whole.
- Gary’s purple shirt. Out with the old, in with the new! Thanks, coach, for booting the bad-omened black shirt and bringing in the game-winning purple polo.
- More than a comeback. The Alamo Bowl is truly a mirror of a great coach, great team, and great school. Go Frogs!
So next time you remember the Alamo, remember the Alamo Bowl too.
