7 Reasons Marist Students Can't Wait To Be Back

It's healthy to get a little break from school here and there, but three months away from our favorite place seems a little excessive. Here are all the things Marist students are most excited about getting back to in a little over a month.

1. Our Local Restaurants

Say what you want about Poughkeepsie, but it’s home to some pretty great restaurants we don’t get advantage to outside of the 12601. Cosimo’s across the street is the only place you can get a homey Italian meal in Potown, and Rossi’s and Lola’s are in some high competition for the best lunch around. The diner across from campus also serves a five star meal at 2am after a night at Union. Speaking of Union…

2. Our ever-so-eventful social scene

Whether you engage in social activities over the summer or not, there is no beating the thrill of a night at Darby’s, Union or River brought to you by our favorite cab drivers. There’s just about a month separating us from the best bar scene in the Dutchess County.

3. Sunday Broadway Shows

A true classic for many Red Foxes. Our $25 school special gets us transportation to and from NYC and a Broadway show at least once a month. A day in our favorite city? No one can complain.

4. Homecoming Weekend

Filled with alumni, Marist football and tailgates, Red Foxes come out of their den for one of the best weekends all fall.

5. Foliage

I swear, there’s something about the foliage at Marist that’s different from any other place. The color change of the leaves gives campus a refreshing feel and is extra appealing to the eye.

6. The Lovely Dining Hall Staff

Regardless on how you feel about the food, the staff at the dining hall does their best to make our day a little better. Whether it’s Pressy at the sandwich line, Charlie who makes our omelettes or Suzanne at Starbucks who knows all our orders, they put a smile on our face with their bubbly attitudes.

7. And of course, an Instagram-worthy sunset pic

While Marist is known for many things, one of our biggest claims to fame is our prime location in the beautiful Hudson Valley overlooking the Hudson River. And every Red Fox knows the sunset over the river makes for the best Instagram post on your timeline. Bonus points for getting the Rotunda in there.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
