I began learning Spanish at a fairly early age. In elementary and middle school we would learn our basic vocabulary: things like colors, numbers, and the alphabet. All through high school I took Spanish classes and really enjoyed them. However I didn't fully fall in love with the language until my junior year when I had a really phenomenal teacher. She made learning the language fun and always made me realize how many doors it would open up for me in the future. (Here's to you, Sra. Purnell!)
When I tell people that I'm studying Spanish, I'm often faced with a negative reaction. So many people say things like, "But you're American, we speak English here!" or "Isn't it hard?" Um, okay. Yes, I am indeed American. Contrary to popular belief, English is not our official language. In fact, we have no official language. It's incredibly important that we broaden our horizons and learn more languages as most countries do without blinking an eye. Also, it is challenging at times — but so is studying biology, economics, nursing, and every other subject. School is hard no matter what you study, but this shouldn't stop you from tackling a second language. So here's a few reason why you should learn a second language.
1. Travel easier.
Traveling abroad can be intimidating if you don't know at least a little of the language that is primarily spoken there. Learning a second language can open so many doors to travel and make you feel more comfortable abroad. I would encourage anyone traveling to a foreign country to at least learn the language at a survival level. Plus, learning a foreign language in college gives you a great reason to study abroad!
2. Discover new music.
Some of my favorite bands are from Spanish speaking countries thanks to the previously mentioned teacher introducing them to us in class. Music is an important way to learn about and feel connected to a culture (and it's even more fun if you understand the lyrics!).
3. Make new friends.
I've studied Spanish for years, but in college I've begun learning American Sign Language as well. Learning ASL has opened up an entirely new community to me. It's much easier to make friends if you can actually communicate with them.
4. Be culturally aware.
Along with learning the actual language, I've learned so much about the cultures of Spanish-speaking countries. This has caused me to care far more about current events happening abroad.
5. Improve your resume.
Learning a second language most definitely makes you more marketable. In this day and age, global communication is very important, and being able to contribute to that is awesome!
6. Learn your native language better.
One thing I quickly noticed when I started studying Spanish was how much better I got at English. When you're dissecting and analyzing an entirely new language, you connect it back to your native language and notice things that have always come naturally. Many languages have similarities that make it easy to connect them. You will probably also realize how ridiculous and challenging English really is!
7. Learn on the go.
Learning a language is so much fun; it enables you to connect to the world in a new way. It's also easy to learn on the go from your computer or smart phone! I recommend the website DuoLingo. They also have an app. Best of all, they're both free! They offer a wide variety of languages including Kilngon. You really can't beat that. Get learning today!
