College began in total chaos. It was exciting, impossible and challenging. It was a little bit scary and a lot of fun. Over the course of these first four months, I met a lot of people -- so many that I could not remember anybody's names for the first week. Then, as I joined more clubs and got more involved in the school community, I met more people who were interested in the same things I was.
However, the very first people you meet at college are those on your floor. A random batch of 18-year-old people, for me, were the ultimate variety pack of Georgetown University's Class of 2019.
After going home for break, you compare notes with your friends from home and maybe realize that you got lucky with these people who you are forced to live alongside.
Here are seven reasons to thank the first people you knew at college and the ones you might never get rid of.
1. They were the first "friends" to go to dinner with on the first night of college.
This also stood true for every time after that when you needed someone to go to the dining hall with.
2. They're the only ones who will test you on your flashcards or help you will an impossible math problem.
Let's be honest, it's probably because you forced them to with heavy bribery. Why did you take calculus again?
3. They are the only reliable fashion committee.
"Guys, is this too trashy?"
4. Everyone steals everyone's Easy-Mac.
Generally, no one hates you for it.
5. No one ever agrees on anything.
Part of the challenge of a random group of people you're suddenly supposed to live alongside is all of you, naturally, have radically different opinions. But in the end, this has only made you stronger in your convictions and (a little) more tolerant of others'.
6. The floor is like a family.
Even when you went out without them, you could come home to freshly-ordered pizza and everyone hanging out in pajamas.
7. Speaking of pajamas, they're always acceptable.
