Last weekend was my first Dads Weekend, and my bank account and I are already counting down the days until the next one. It's not very often you get to spend so much one-on-one time with your favorite guy -- even better, in your favorite place. Explaining your college life over Thanksgiving dinner just isn't the same as taking him to all the iconic spots and experiencing some rites of passage for your campus. Although your dad might not recover for a few days (or weeks) after, you know getting a little taste of college is his favorite weekend of the year too.
Here are just a few of the reasons why Dads Weekend is truly the best as told by my second favorite dad in the world.
1. Free drinks, free food, free everything
When dad comes to town, the sweatshirts in the bookstore start to look a lot cuter. Not to mention, he wants to hit every bar in town.
2. When Dad breaks it down on the dance floor
Once all the dads have warmed up to each other they show their true selves. Could be "the Nae Nae", could be going freestyle. Somewhat cringeworthy, somewhat entertaining.
3. When your dad becomes friends with the other dads
When forced to spend the whole weekend with strangers, the small talk can sometimes come to an awkward halt. Luckily, there will always be sports.
4. Dad's dad jokes
From bad puns to making fun of you, dad jokes are something that no child has ever escaped. As cheesy as they are, you know you missed them.
5. Watching your dad relive his college years
Even if your dad didn't go to your school, the smell of cheap beer will still throw him back to the best four years of his life. Although he might not catch on to the current lingo -- "What's a frat star?"
6. Mom-free for the weekend
Let's be honest, dads are way more fun without moms. She definitely called to make sure everything was going OK; then you and your dad definitely made a joke about it.
7. Spending quality time with your number-one guy
Because his dance moves and jokes make you miss home just a little bit more.
Even though by law we are adults, we still don't really feel like it in this utopia called college. As we get older, we start to become peers with our parents. This is weird, but nice. Having your parents come to college is a good step when entering this unknown territory. Who knows -- maybe you'll get to sit at the big kids' table this year at Thanksgiving.
