It's an age old argument- cats vs. dogs. Most people have a preference for one. Dogs are man's best friend and cats are somehow associated with spinsterhood. Both are great in their own ways, but as a feline favoring gal myself, I'm here to explain why I love cats so much.
1. Their haughtiness – there’s a bright side.
It's true that cats can be snobby, but I look at it another way. Dogs for the most part love everyone and everything; they are always excited and friendly. When a dog wants to get cuddly with you, it's not that special (though it’s still pretty great!). But you have to work for a cat's affection, so when they finally give it to you, it feels awesome.
2. Purring.
Come on. It's adorable. And there is nothing as soothing as a warm ball of fuzz sitting on you gently vibrating. Especially when you're feeling down. Natural therapy! Bonus if they’ll sit over your tummy when it’s that time of month – like a heating pad, but way better.
3. They're a good laugh.
For animals with a reputation for being so smart and above us all, cats can sure be dummies. They get stuck in the weirdest places and they're terrified by silly things. I love sneaking up behind mine and poking him, and he'll jump with shock and run off under the table. And of course when they do something stupid, they pretend it didn't happen or like they meant to do that. "Obviously that was my intent...duh." Gotta love that.
4. They really are sweet.
Cats aren't as hateful as some people think. Like people, they have personalities, and some are real sourpusses, but others are just mushes. They love belly rubs and want constant attention and enjoy playing with their fellow human pals. They form bonds with people and sometimes they miss them when apart. I think that cats really do care about us.
5. They're cute as heck.
How can you look at these fluffs and tell me you don't want to pet them? With those twitchy noses and ears, flicking tails, tiny toe beans, whiskers, and squeaks, they’re absolutely cuddly.
6. They do understand us...in their way.
They might not speak our language, but like dogs, cats can still sense our emotions and some things we say. My cat knows his name and if we call it, he'll turn around and look at us or come trotting over. Sometimes when I talk to him, he gives me a slow understanding blink and nods. He even watches TV on occasion. Sometimes cats can tell when you or another animal is sick, and they’ll hang around for comfort.
7. Their excitement about food is entertaining.
I'm not sure if I've ever seen an animal so enthusiastic about food as I've seen cats get (though not all). When my cat wants some, he'll follow everyone around the house meowing and getting all cute with you, then sit on a chair in the kitchen and bat at every passerby if he’s not immediately appeased. If he hears anything remotely like his food or even sees us preparing our food, he watches with wide eyes and starts rubbing against our feet. He doesn't even have the patience to wait a few seconds for us to put his bowl down- he'll try to knock it out of our hands. Once, I found him on the counter nibbling at my smoked salmon.
8. They're quiet.
Definitely a perk dog owners usually do not enjoy. Cats keep to themselves and keep silent. You never have to deal with headache-inducing barking at any random hour or your cat freaking out at every person in your house. They’re so chill. As an introvert, I love the company of such calm creatures.
