There is a never ending list of majors you can apply for when you join a university or college. Some of the most poplar majors are in nursing, business, social sciences, liberal arts, etc. The list is endless; however, not a single one of those is better than education, and here are 10 reasons to prove it.
1. The name tag.
You know those fancy little name tags that your see your professors wearing? When you're an education major, you get one of those fancy little things, and you get to wear it around campus like a boss. They are made to wear into the schools that we student-teach in, but the dean of education encourages us to wear it on campus, and let me tell you, it makes us look pretty dang official (and highly professional).
2. You get to use Twitter in class!
This is not a joke, people. We actually use Twitter in class, and we use it often. Twitter is widely used among educators to share ideas for the classroom. In the education program, there is a whole session on how to use Twitter professionally. We spent a whole day tweeting out in class. It was epic.
3. The students.
We get to spend a lot of hands-on time working with children. While other people are stuck in boring classrooms, we're spending our time hanging out with kids! It is truly a blessing hanging out with the kids all day and learning all about them.
4. Teacher discounts
I'm all about saving a dollar. What college student isn't? When you're in the education program and you wear your handy dandy name tag, most businesses will give you discounts. I get discounts in restaurants, book stores and sometimes even convenience stores, although my personal favorite is when I get discounts at the cupcake store, cause hey, what teacher (or student teacher) doesn't deserve a sweet treat every now and then?
5. Less time sitting (in class) and more time doing!
Most of your time in the education program is spent student-teaching, which means you aren't forced to sit in a classroom nearly as much as students in other fields of study. For someone like me, it's perfect, because I'm fidgety. Sitting for hours at a time has never been appealing to me, so the less days, the better.
6. You get to be creative!
Education majors have a ton of room to come up with out of this world ideas! From planning out future classroom themes to creating no less than stellar lesson plans, we are always being called to think out of the box. We never get bored in the education program because we're always on our toes coming up with new ideas!
And without further ado.. my top reason for encouraging you to become an education major is...
7. Extra holidays!
This is no joke, my dear friends! We actually get extra days off! How you ask? Through school holidays and teacher work days, of course! You see, the public schools we teach in often have different breaks than those lined up with your college or university. So when students aren't in school, you can't do much with student teaching; therefore, you get an extra day off! It works the same way with teacher work days. If your cooperating teacher doesn't need your assistance on their teacher work day, you get yet another free day. It's pretty epic.
Education majors have it made. Point blank.
There are so many perks to being an education major. It's the perfect major for those who love to be creative, enjoy investing in people and those who like extra breaks.
