There is a part of us all that dreads family functions. Sure, it is great getting to see your long lost Aunt Sally and little cousin Jeffrey (who is not really that little anymore,) but I think we can all agree that family functions can just be... awkward. Everyone seemingly asks you the same questions, or gives you the same comment, over and over.
1. "Wow, look at you all grown up!"
I mean, what do you even say in response when Aunt Sally tells you this? "Oh, thanks Aunt Sally, and you certainly got old."
2. "I remember when you were just *this* tall!"
Do they realize how many other people say this to you? This comment just gets less and less fascinating as the years go on.
3. "What grade are you in?"
Well, if you're like me, your response is as follows: "..... I am gonna be a junior in college.", with some sass of course.
4. "I bet you have all the boys/girls chasing after you!"
Ok, this is just uncomfortable for more than one reason. Especially if your answer is: "Actually, I have no one.. so, thanks."
5. "It has been so long since I've seen you!"
...and you play polite and perform the pleasantries, just to turn to your dad and say "Who even was that?!"
6. "So what happens after college (or high school)?"
Cue panic. Cue nerves kicking into gear. Cue sweat. Cue stuttering. Why does Aunt Sally ask such difficult questions?
7. "You look good!"
Well, thank you, I am flattered, but I can't help but wonder if you would actually tell me if I looked bad.
Go to family functions, even though they are AWKWARD. Put on your best smile. Be friendly. Hug and kiss your relatives.
But, maybe make copies of these answers to hand out to relatives like Aunt Sally the night before the function.
