It's no secret that forced or built-up triples are known to have a bad reputation. While neither myself nor my roommates were particularly thrilled to be assigned to our forced triple, to be honest all three of us were quite upset about it, they truly aren't as bad as they seem. Yes it is true that you only get one closet to share between the three of you, or in some cases you may get two smaller ones. But all three of you will be guaranteed to have your own desks, chairs, and bureaus. Please know that being assigned to a forced triple isn't a death sentence. Here are some of the positives of living in a forced triple.
1. You're saving money!
Living in a forced triple can knock off anywhere up to $2,000 a year off of your bill. That's major savings that can really help you take out less money in loans.
2. Three's a party!
Living with just one other person can be intimidating at first. Move- in day can be anxiety inducing knowing that you're going to be living and spending tons of time with one total stranger. Living with two people can make the situation less awkward because of the group aspect instead of the duo.
3. Sharing is caring!
Having two roommates means having two extra wardrobes, two other friend groups, two more perspectives, and two more people to share food with. See I told you there were positives
4. Built in tie- breaker!
Because there are three of you living in your dorm room that means that if there is ever any form of disagreement, for better or for worse, there is automatically a tie- breaker
5. Out of your comfort zone!
You will probably have fairly limited alone time in your room. But fear not because this is a good thing! This is going to force you into finding new groups of friends and will encourage you to find your new favorite places to study and hang out.
6. Pack less!
Sharing a room with two other people means that you will be responsible for bringing less to the room. While each person in a double may have to bring three or four large items to share, you all might only have to bring one or two. This will save money and car space for move- in day.
7. Way out!
If your forced triple is really not working out for the best there is always a way out! Talk to your RA or RHD and they will work with housing and break up the triple as fast as they can.
