Let's face it; our moms give us the best advice, whether we want to admit it or not. They seem to have gone through the same experiences, jumped through the same hopes and cried over the same things. At times their advice may seem unwelcoming and we may not want to hear it. It may even be hours, days or years later, but eventually we realize, their advice is the best thing we could ever ask (or not ask) for. Here is a list of the top seven pieces of advice you need to take your mom for.
1. That blue eye shadow in junior high really didn't look good.
Admit it—you totally tried to channel your inner Baby Spice with the blue eye shadow. That eye shadow gave you the perfect sense of purpose and you thought you totally were rocking it. Plus, your crush's favorite color was blue so it totally worked. Obviously we were crushed when our moms said it did not look good. Looking back, we should have listened, but thanks mom for letting me wear it anyways.
2. Don't wash your lights with your darks.
This advice may have seemed a bit obvious and a little over bearing when we were growing up and moving out, but we totally tried it. We thought we were able to outsmart our moms and the washer. Turns out, we were wrong. Once again, her advice was spot on.
3. That boy really wasn't the one for you.
Our moms have been there and done that. We may not have wanted to hear that they weren't the one for us, but our moms were right. They were not our first love, true love or even someone to cry over. In the wise words of JB, "My mama don't like you and she likes everyone."
4. It's OK to ugly cry.
What you plan out, never goes how you plan. That can be devastating. The grade you wanted, you may not get. At times, it may seem like the world is against you. Keeping everything inside can make things worse. It is true, sometimes you really do just need a good ugly cry to let it out. If you're lucky, your mom might even ugly cry with you.
5. This too, shall pass.
There are times when we feel like our bad streak will never end. We will never catch a break and our hearts will never heal. It may feel like this moment will never end. Thanks to our moms rational side, we realize that this too, shall pass.
6. Your mistakes do not define who you are.
Every time we messed up, whether it was a big mistake or a small mistake, it is always our moms who talk us through it. They calm us down and make us laugh, even when we swear we are going to be angry for hours. They forgive us even when we cannot forgive ourselves.
7. Dream big.
There is never a dream that is too big for us to chase. Since we were young our moms always encouraged us that we could be whoever we wanted to. From wanting to be a doctor to an astronaut to any other dream job we had growing up, our moms always told us we would be the best. We entered our school years knowing that we were capable of more than we could ever image. With our moms at our sides cheering us on, we know we can accomplish anything.
Thank you mom for all your advice. It may not seem that I am always thankful for it, but I am.
