For nine years, NPR has been putting on some of the best concerts in music, all from the desk of “All Songs Considered" host, Bob Boilen. These performances have featured artists from genres from all across the music world. The intimate settings for these concerts have created a new way of viewing some of the best artists working in the music world. After many hours of rigorously scanning the NPR website, I have found eleven of the most enjoyable, funny, and surprising "Tiny Desk Concerts" that have been put out.
Anderson Paak. & The Free Nationals
Known for his energetic live performances, Anderson Paak was put out of his element at the NPR offices. Accompanied by his band, The Free Nationals, Paak runs through some selections from his album "Malibu" along with a crowd favorite from his collab album with Knxwledge. In the video, Paak even acknowledges how difficult it is for him to perform his songs in such an intimate setting. This is why the Tiny Desk series is so entertaining because it makes the artists truly rework some of their best songs into some true magic.
The Internet
One of the most accomplished graduates of the Odd Future Academy for Dope Musicians has been The Internet after the release of their 2015 album Ego Death. Syd, the band's vocalist, has a voice that still maintains its studio quality even within this stripped-down setting.
Gucci Mane
This recent performance was one of the biggest surprises in the history of the series. NPR has a history of featuring more folksy artists and bands than trap rappers, but, this worked out perfectly. With the masterful keys of super-producer, Zaytoven, backing up his performance, Guwop brought his same charisma and style from the trap to the Tiny Desk.
Jessie Ware
Jessie Ware has been a favorite of mine for a long time, and this performance only solidifies that feeling. Not only is her voice breathtaking, but she also shows off her charm and humor as she provides the crowd with some lighthearted moments throughout her set.
Lake Street Dive
The chemistry between the four members of Lake Street Dive is seen in full force in this performance they did for NPR. The three songs they performed were all written by three different members of the band and really showed the musical talent of the group.
Oddisee
The hometown kid, Oddisee, comes to the NPR offices in his hometown of Washington D.C. to give a special performance from his album The Good Fight. The impressive rapping and technically sound production is all there as Oddisee puts on a great show in a strange setting.
T-Pain
The most pleasantly surprising concert on this list was the one that got me into Tiny Desk. Seeing auto-tune legend, T-Pain, strip away his technical flourishes and showcase his natural voice was an amazing thing to watch.
