I think we can all agree on a few of these simple pleasures life has to offer.

Because finals week is upon us and I'm pretty sure my brain has decided to take a vacation, I decided I should write about some nice things that we can all appreciate, even in the midst of this terrible time. Turns out, it's hard to think of nice things when you're screaming into the void about studying and writing and crying. Nonetheless, here are seven nice things I managed to export from my empty head into this piece!

1. Water

Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! Water is your best friend, and we are lucky enough to have unlimited access to potable water. Don't take this for granted, appreciate it. Take care of yourself during this trying time. You'll thank yourself later!

2. Breakfast food

Breakfast food has never, and will never do me wrong. Pancakes, waffles, french toast, eggs, hashbrowns, cereal, toast, etc. You name it, I'm there. Thinking about breakfast food provides a shining light at the end of this very long, very dark tunnel. In fact, cook some breakfast food! Make sure you eat regularly. Food is an essential part of self-care!

3. Snow

It's winter! That means it's cold, windy and terrible, but wonderful at the same time. Snow is wonderful, and especially magical when it's falling and floating from the sky so magically! You can make snow-people, snow angels, and you can have a snowball fight!

4. Candles

Candles are always magnificent and they are nice to have during finals week. They provide a lovely smelling constant light to help you navigate through the dark tunnel until you reach the breakfast food. In fact, there are places that sell breakfast food scented candles; though some smell better than others.

5. Music

Music is my best friend. And 'tis the season for Christmas music! So there's no shame in listening to Wham!, Mariah Carey, and PTX for five hours straight.

6. Puppies

Everyone loves puppies. Even if you don't love puppies, you love puppies. Get on the old Google and find yourself some cute pups to look at. Maybe you're in the market for a good dog? Check out shelters and find a good dog that needs a home—spoiler alert, all dogs are good dogs.

7. Kittens

Once again, everyone loves kittens. Even if you don't, you do. Kittens do a lot of funny and adorable things that we film and post online for world consumption. So get out there and find some cute pics and videos to watch when you should be studying! You'll regret it, but you'll also be thankful that you gave yourself a break.

So basically, just try to appreciate the good things in life. I know how hard it can be, especially when you've only just entered the very long, dark tunnel. But you will soon exit and be able to bathe in the light of everything good in the world.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
