Netflix has caused many problems for people: we lose our motivation to do anything because we know that there’s a new episode of our favorite show coming up (which then leads us to binge watch the entire season all over again, just cause), we anticipate the new original series and we have to watch it as soon as it's released or we just get so lazy that everything else seems to not be important to us anymore. Sometimes we just want to Netlfix and Chill, and yes legitimately chill. I don’t want to make Chil-Dren with you, just watch the damn show or movie.
Netflix has taken over all of our computer and television screens (shout out to RoKu). Now, cable has become a thing of the past! Which is crazy and weird to think about. Netflix and even Hulu are convenient for anyone on a budget (ahem, college students), not making much money but yet these individuals still want to enjoy their favorite shows. It has even expanded into making it’s own original series, which people are losing their minds over! Here are some shows on Netflix that caught my eye and I would recommend others to start watching.
1.“NARCOS”
This Netflix original series follows the life story of infamous Colombian drug trafficker, Pablo Escobar. I will gladly admit that I am obsessed with this show! I was never educated on or knew anything about Pablo Escobar, but now I could probably write a book on him (well roughly). This series is intense, educational and the writing is impeccable. Also, I recently found out that Wagner Moura, who plays Escobar isn’t even Colombian (He’s Brazilian) and did not speak a word of Spanish prior to filming. He enrolled himself in Spanish classes and now he’s completely fluent. Goals.
2. “STRANGER THINGS”
I didn’t expect to enjoy a show about sci-fi and government secrets but this show does a great job at mixing both those elements without boring the audience to death. Also, Eleven is a badass. In general that entire cast, including Winona Rider (so excited that she’s back on our television screens) is amazing. I have never wanted to be friends with 12 year olds until now. Basically the show (in a nutshell) follows the disappearance of a young boy, now his friends and family must confront terrifying and “out of this realm” forces to try and get him back. Sounds weird on paper but you’ll be hooked once you watch the first episode.
3. “PEAKY BLINDERS”
THIS SHOW IS WONDERFUL. As a history and action lover, this show is just the icing on top of the cake. It has all the elements that make a good action filled, suspenseful and kick ass show. It revolves around the lives of the Peaky Blinders: A gangster family from Birmingham England, who set razor blades on the inside of their caps (because who doesn’t do that, right?) and will do anything to move up in the car making business. There’s blood, there’s lust and there’s trouble. Also Tom Hardy is in it, enough said.
4. “AMERICAN CRIME”
Centered around the lives of different individuals (different story for every season), with dramas focusing on the aspects of American life and how each character’s plot interacts with the criminal justice system.
5. “ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK”
Many people love this show for its representation of life behind bars for women. This show has drama, comedy and sensitivity. It has received backlash for trying to make prison seem completely different than it actually is, but it's still a great show.
6. “SALEM”
If you’re into the eerie and gory stories about witchcraft then this show is a must! It’ll have you on the edge of your seats and/or covering your eyes, but really you can’t look away because it’s too intriguing.
7. “SHAMELESS”
This show is about a dysfunctional yet adorable family with bad habits and awful influences. I haven’t watched it yet but it just seems interesting and refreshing to see a family that isn’t all about rainbows and unicorns for once.
The list goes on and on, there are intellectual, philosophical and comical shows to watch on Netlfix and they all stand out on their own. Each show brings something new and fresh, while also bringing light to real life situations. So whether you’re catching up on an older show that you’ve loved and have seen before (“One Tree Hill”, “Gilmore Girls”, etc) or tuning into a newer series, just sit back and relax. But don’t let one hour of Netflix lead to 12 hours of Netflix. (I know, sometimes you just need to watch “one more episode”; we’ve all been there)
