Women's friendship is a popular theme in movies for a good reason. Female friendship is true, powerful and, ultimately, fun. We make each other stronger, and there is no one who knows more about you than your best friends. In the words of Leslie Knope, champion of female friendship, "Hoes before bros. Ovaries before brovaries. Uteruses before duderuses."
These 8 movies are the perfect examples of the strength in women's friendship.
1. "Romy and Michele's High School Reunion"
Romy and Michele. Where to begin? These hilarious women are the best of best friends. They've been best friends since high school, and they decide to impress their high school's "it" girls when they return to their class reunion. (Spoiler alert: They didn't actually invent the Post-It note.)
From unplanned synchronized dance routines to matching latex dresses and everything in between, Romy and Michele prove that sometimes true friendship beats the popular girls' clique. They represent the fun side of friendship, and they can be their best and weirdest selves with each other. "You look so good with blonde hair and black roots it's, like, not even funny."
2. "The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants"
Can an article about female friendship even exist without mentioning this movie? This movie is iconic for 90's and 00's girls, and every friend group has argued about who is the Bridget, Lena, Carmen, and Tibby of the group. (I am Lena.) These four have been friends since their mothers took a pregnancy aerobics class together, and though they are each so different, their love and support for each other is real.
They have helped each other through heartbreak, family struggles, and everything else a teenage girl will go through. They are each other's champions and confidants, and they show that sometimes you just need your best friends to be there for you and cry with you. *Cue the tears.*
3. "Fried Green Tomatoes"
THIS IS SUCH A GOOD MOVIE. Seriously, if you haven't seen it, go watch it right now. A middle-aged woman struggling to put the spark back in her marriage makes friends with a spunky, old woman at the nursing home. She listens to the old woman's stories about Idgie and Ruth, best friends with a slew of adventures. This movie will make you both laugh and cry and appreciate the value of a lifelong friendship. And the scene with Kathy Bates seducing her husband in a Saran wrap dress will make you laugh every time.
Idgie and Ruth prove that sometimes your friends are your soulmates. Their relationships didn't work out, but they always had each other. They save and help each other through heartbreak after heartbreak, all the while laughing and keeping a positive attitude.
4. "Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood"
"YA-YA!!" After watching this movie, I learned that friendship is timeless. Women's friendships have always been real and true, no matter the era. These four women formed their club when they were children, and they still celebrate each other and their friendship even when they're grandmothers. Friendship doesn't have to end; it can continue even until we are old and wrinkled. Husbands and children shouldn't stop friendships, and your friends are family, too.
These women are the ultimate support system, and they never gave up on one of their friends who struggled for years. The Ya-Ya Sisterhood shows that friendship is essential and sometimes the most lasting and important relationship in a person's life.
5. "Sex and the City"
"Sex and the City" is a modern day classic about the power of women's friendships. These women show that though sometimes men come and go, friends remain. Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda have seen each other through every good and bad relationship.
"The First Wives Club" is the anthem for any woman whose husband left them for a younger woman. These fiery, college friends reunite after one of their friends commits suicide because her husband leaves her, and they all discover that their husbands, well, suck. They pool their smarts and resources to get the best kind of revenge on their husbands- a woman's revenge.
This movie will inspire every woman to be independent and to take nothing from a man. The inspirational end scene will have you off the couch and dancing and singing along to "YOU DON'T OWN ME." *twirls*
7. "Steel Magnolias"
I'm ending with "Steel Magnolias" because it's such a powerful and emotional movie. This movie includes the power of not only female friendships, but also the power of a mother and daughter relationship. It will make you feel all the feels and hold your friends tight.
Southern friendships, in particular, are represented in this movie. These women could gossip and laugh, but they were incredibly loyal to their friends, and they never missed an important moment in each other's lives. A great quote from this movie says,"I would rather have thirty minutes of something wonderful than a lifetime of nothing special."
So there you have it. The seven best female friendship movies of all time. Whether you identify more with Romy and Michelle or Annelle and Truvy from "Steel Magnolias," friendship is friendship, and it should always be valued.
