1. When You Make Up A Very Hypothetical Situation and Work Yourself Up Over It
We've all been there. One minute you're playing fetch with your dog in the backyard, and the next minute you're fighting back tears as you clutch her to your chest because you imagined that she got hit by a car and it was your fault. (Or maybe this only applies to me?) Regardless, being overemotional and having an extremely active imagination seem to go hand in hand.
2. When You Say Something Negative About Yourself and Other People Agree With You
"I am seriously so bad at public speaking." I say. "Haha yeah, you seemed really nervous up there!" Oh this one is the worst, because it is my fault for setting the situation up. Not only do I feel bad for ragging on myself, but I feel even worse knowing that they agree with me. The thing is, they probably didn't even give any thought to what I said and were only being agreeable. But to someone who over analyzes everything, this situation is sure to be a death trap.
3. When You are Telling a Big Fish Tale and Someone Calls Your Bluff
This one is probably the worst out of all of them. People who exaggerate details make to be the best story tellers because they will go to great lengths to keep their audience engaged. A five pound cat that was probably more afraid of you than you were of it all of a sudden becomes the fifteen pound cat that was making eye contact with you while revving up for an attack. The story is going well until someone inevitably pipes up and says, "The cat was not that big! It ran away after like two minutes." And then everything becomes awkward and deflated because your story is now discredited and your audience is no longer interested.
4. When You Get Annoyed When People Who Don't Know How to Exaggerate Properly Give You a Bad Rap
Only the most seasoned exaggerators know that the words dying and starving are off limits. When over stressing something, it's best to stick with the adjectives and the way you feel, not completely make something what is is not.
5. When People Don't Believe You When You're Being Serious
Because we are known for stretching many things, people often mistakenly think we stretch everything. It is difficult when we try to tell someone that our stomach hurts a lot, and they think that we only have minor aches and pains and are only being dramatic. Which brings me to my next point...
6. Being Called Dramatic
I could understand why people think those who like to exaggerate are dramatic, and maybe it is because often times we are. Unfortunately many people think being dramatic is a bad thing, while we who actually are know that it can be quite a comical personality trait.
7. Overall, We Who Exaggerate Know That it is not a Bad Thing by Any Means
Sure we wade in a bit too deep when recalling events, but we truly do make up a large part of the population of talented writers and storytellers. We also are great communicators, and are great at explaining how we feel.
