One of my biggest life regrets is not watching Gilmore Girlswhile it was on t.v. Thank God for Netflix, because I would've gone my entire life without knowing this show existed. The best part about summer is having an excuse to indulge in Netflix marathons, and this show was at the top of my must watch list. I can't find a more relatable show that's ever been on television. Between the coffee addition, the ups and downs, the relationships, and the disappointments, I felt myself having a much deeper connection with this show. In light of the Gilmore Girls revival coming to Netflix this fall, I've been reflecting on the life lessons this show has taught me.
1. Your mistakes are a part of you, but they do not define you.
Lorelai and Rory are flawed, as all humans are. Yes, we're going to screw up a lot in life, but that doesn't determine you we are for the rest of our lives.
2. Sometimes you need to kiss a few frogs before you find Mr. Right.
Neither of the Gilmore girls had a great track record in the relationship department, but it's something that a lot of us go through. It took Lorelai a few seasons to come to her senses about Luke, but I truly believe that when it's meant to be, everything will work itself out. As humans, all we ever want is to love and be loved, and we were constantly reminded of that in every episode.
3. Even when we hate admitting it, our mothers are typically always right.
Moms usually can spot a bad apple from a mile away. It's not always because they want to be negative, it's because they've probably had a fair share of bad apples in their own life.
4. Sometimes we just need to be blunt.
Remember when we were told that honesty is the best policy? Well, this show took that to the extreme. Sometimes you just need to tell it like it is!
5. Smart is the new sexy.
This was the first show that had a cast full of intelligent women. There wasn't a person who played the "dumb" one or the "ditsy" one. They were all college-educated women who strived to be more than trophy wives who earned a Mrs. degree.
6. Money doesn't buy happiness.
Lorelei worked so hard to distance herself from her life of privilege in Hartford. Moving to Stars Hollow allowed her to experience what it was like to work your way up and earn everything you have. Despite coming from a family that had money, she found greater happiness being around everyday people. The country club dinners and junior league parties just weren't her cup of tea.
7. Sarcasm is the ultimate form of comedy.
All of the women on this show were intelligent, and if you listen to some of their sarcastic jokes, you realize how intelligent they actually are. A lot of the jokes made are references to classic books and movies, and if you are unaware of those references you'll miss the joke. I found myself going to Google constantly so I could fully understand their sarcasm.
"Gilmore Girls" will always be one of my all time favorites, and I'm counting down the days until I can return to Stars Hollow!
