1. We all have issues.
From the moment Dan recognized the separation between his beloved Brooklyn and the Upper East Side, he longed to become a part of that in-crowd. When he achieved his goal, through writing himself in as “Lonely Boy,” he realized that the rich have just as many problems as the rest of us, if not more.
2. Our issues are often hidden to people who are not in our close circle.
What can we learn from Eric’s attempted suicide, Serena’s overdose, and Lily’s hidden illness? Even family members keep secrets from one another. We need to stop judging people from how they appear on the outside.
3. Do what makes you happy.
People are always going to be lurking around the corner, criticizing our choice of career, spouse, friends, major. Ignore the haters.
4. Fear only gets you so far.
It's obvious in Blair's life that if she had simply stopped commanding everybody around her to do whatever she said, she might have made more friends and had more people to support her. Sorry Blair, but sometimes “I’m sorry” works better than sabotage.
5. It’s not what you know; it’s who you know.
Countless opportunities presented themselves to Dan, Nate, Rufus, Jenny, Chuck, Serena, Blair, Vanessa. Were they always qualified? Nope, but you never know who’s going to be your next boss. Make contacts with people and you’ll see how key networking is.
6. Dress to impress.
Nobody wants to work with a sloppy person. Dress for the job you want to have, not the job you currently have.
7. Headbands will always be in style.
Blair, we will forever thank you for this reminder.
