If you're in a time crunch and have a few remaining holiday gifts to get together, a trip to Goodwill or the craft store could solve all your gift giving needs.
1. Candles in a mug
Pick up some cute mugs from Goodwill (teacups work well too) for 99 cents. Meltdown an old or half-used candle you’re tired of in the oven at 350 degrees. Stick a wick at the bottom (you can get them super cheap at any craft store) and pour the melted wax until a third of the cup is filled. After this layer dries, fill the cup the rest of the way full with the already melted wax and you’ve got yourself an adorable and inexpensive candle!
2. Books with fancy covers
There are tons of classics with their covers redone all fancy and hip, but if you don’t have the budget to hit up Anthropologie or Barnes and Nobel, try a few local antique stores and you’ll be surprised at what you’ll find. The best part is, even if you never get around to reading the book or aren’t really a Jane Austen fan, this gift makes a cute decoration. It also involves no crafting skills but makes a pretty thoughtful surprise for all the readers in your life.
3. Embroidery of all kinds
Embroidery looks incredible on anything, and once you get the hang of it, it’s just about the most affordable hobby out there. You can turn an old, plain hat into something so Brandy Melville-esque at a fraction of the price, embroider a denim jacket pocket, or just attempt a simple hoop.
4. Chalk-paint anything
The best parts about chalk paint are that: a. you can literally use it on anything and b. you never have to be afraid of messing up, because it’ll wipe right off with some water on a paper towel. You can chalk paint wood slices or tiny little ornaments and then write on them with a non-permanent chalk pen. Or, if your not a huge fan of your own handwriting, just attach a piece of chalk and allow your family member/friend to finish it up with their own personal touch.
5. Homemade sugar scrub
I’m sure you’ve seen this one on Pinterest time and time again, but you really can’t go wrong with it! Add some vanilla or peppermint essential oil to a cup of white or brown sugar mixed with coconut oil, throw it in a mason jar and give to mom.
6. Print photos
A gift that never goes out of style and will be cherished for years to come. Photo printing sites such as Social Print Studios make it easy to order prints of your favorite Instagram photos. Order a set of 24 for just 12 dollars, or if you’re in a time crunch and have a color printer of your own, simply buy some photo paper and resize/condense your images before printing.
7. Music
For all the music lovers in your life: search your local thrift or record store for their favorite bands. You can pick up multiple albums too, because most records and CDs that I find tend to be anywhere from one to ten bucks. Or, make a playlist of your favorite tracks and burn onto a CD for a more personal touch.
