For nearly three years, I have worked for a latchkey program. For those who are unfamiliar with latchkey, it is a before care and after care program for children of the elementary school age. Working with children has opened my eyes to new experiences, wonders, and most importantly — life lessons.
1. Never underestimate the power of the smile.
When I'm feeling down in the dumps, the kids instantly cheer me up with their infectious smiles. After my shift is over, I always have a good day because their smiles create such a positive impact.
2. Don't sweat the small stuff
Often in latchkey programs, the kids play some sort of group game. For instance, in tag, kids will either be out or they will be the tagger at some point. Rather than getting upset over their loss, they take it in stride and continue playing. In my personal life, I've learned not to fret over not getting the laundry done a specific day or the fact I wasn't able to make my bed in the morning.
3. Laughter is the best medicine.
I've noticed kids tend to laugh at the strangest and silliest things. Any time they laugh, I instantly laugh. In life, hard times are unavoidable. Laughter, especially with kids, is the cure for all things stress-related.
4. Try new things.
In latchkey programs, new activities and games are always being played. In most cases, every single kid participates at least once, even if the game/activity may be difficult. Now that I work with kids and see them participate in new games and activities with fearlessness, I now try new things with the same courage.
5. Be creative.
At least once a day, the kids do some sort of craft. Although there are instructions, each child expresses their own individuality and creativity through the art project. Being creative is never a bad thing and sometimes it's okay to break the rules.
6. Express yourself freely.
Anyone who lives with a kid, babysits, or comes into contact with a kid at some point knows they have no filter. Even though they say inappropriate things, speaking your mind and truthfully speaking it is never a bad thing.
7. And most importantly, never give up.
As an adult, this is the most important life lesson we often forget. Before we even try something new or set a new goal, we decide it's impossible. Over the years, I've watched countless children continue to try and try until they achieve their goal. Their perseverance is astounding.

In truth, kids are some of the smartest people. It's easy to brush off their words because they're kids, but I hope we can all learn something from them and strive for excellence with those lessons in mind.
