"Late Capitalism" is a term coined by a neo-Marxist to describe and talk about capitalism post-1947. Late capitalism is a term used to refer to the absurdities of our contemporary economy and the inequalities it fosters.
I have been thinking about this term a lot and about how we need to start talking about capitalism not at a theoretical level but on the level of lived experiences and mundane things we see around us every day.
So here are 7 examples of late capitalism you've probably seen but never thought about!!
1. Kendall Jenner's Pepsi commercial
Even my unhealthy obsession with the Kardashians couldn't keep me from denying that this commercial not only exemplified capitalism but also ignored the numerous people of color who put their lives at risk to protest a society built on their oppression.
2. United Airlines forcibly removes passenger
The blatant disregard of human dignity by big corporations is late capitalism.
3. Fyre Festival
The luxurious festival that meant to cost thousands of dollars was anything but paradise.
4. Brexit
A decision guided by fear of economic threat posed by outsiders. Brexit is undoubtedly a product of a failed capitalist system.
5. Aftermath of hurricane Harvey
Numerous corporations descended to Houston to win publicly financed contracts to rebuild the area with no taxes being paid on their profits. Trump further called the aftermath of Harvey "a wonderful thing."
6. A juicer that connects to wifi (uh?)
Late capitalism includes the innovation of, may I say, completely unnecessary products like a wifi juicer.
7. BB&T Center for the Study of Capitalism
BEHOLD!! Late Capitalism exists even in our beloved mother so dear, Wake Forest. Our institution is not only a product of capitalism but also houses within it organizations and systems that support and propagate capitalism, a system under which minorities are bound to be oppressed.
