As we come into the holiday season, it can be difficult to find gifts for everyone that you love without seriously breaking the bank. Particularly for me as a college student, it's sometimes overwhelming. However, everyone always underestimates the power of good homemade, personally crafter presents. These are great because they remind everyone of the old fashioned spirit of Christmas rather than crass commercialism, but they also feel good on both ends. DIY gifts are a great way to add meaning and save cash without ever looking cheap or forgetful.
1. Tie Blankets
Fleece Tie Blankets are so simple to make, and are so unique and creative. Not only can they be highly personalised, but they are memorable and very practical.
2. Sugar Scrubs
It's pretty easy to make a sweet smelling, relaxing sugar scrub. Although you can buy these, they're pretty easy to replicate, like through this coconut and peppermint scrub perfect for the holiday season.
3. Soaps
Although these sound complicated, with a little bit of preparation, it's simple and really pays off. Coconut, mint, orange, grapefruit, lavender, combinations; there are so many options to be unique and personal, you really can't go wrong. See a tutorial here.
4. Baking Jars
A fun idea for that one person who is too hard to buy for is to gift them a baking jar; like brownies or cookies. Who doesn't have a sweet tooth around the holidays? It's hard to resist baking, particularly if the ingredients are already measured and supplied to you. It's so simple- plus you can decorate the jar and personalise it to your heart's content.
5. Paint-dyed utensils
If you have a friend who is a foodie, you can gift them easily by adding some color and personalising some utensils just for them. This simple gift can go a long way; see the tutorial here.
6. Bookmarks
A multi-use, simple gift that can also go a long way is homemade bookmarks, simply made. All you really need are pliers, ribbons, clamps, and optional trinkets or decoration. The ribbon clamps are cheap and easy to use, and these bookmarks look incredible. They would make a perfect book, paired alongside a book or journal for your friend that already has everything.
7. Candles
Whether you place these inside mason jars, old china, or another creative place of your choice, candles are a simple gift to make that will provide hours of fulfilment on the recipient's side. You can add aromas and decorations, too. Candle-making instructions can be found here.
DIY presents are not as complicated as it may seem. They are a great way to add meaning and save cash this giving season.
