7 Days Of Grand Prix

Sunday to Sunday. A race of a different kind.

7 Days Of Grand Prix

Sunday night: All fun and games. Morale is high and you and your buddy only have good vibes for the week. Then, sh*t gets weird and suddenly you're in a ridiculously small room packed with people listening to "London Bridge" by Fergie.

Monday morning: You just woke up and now you have to drag your butt to class. You think to yourself, "I have to do this all week? I can't do it. I won't make it." You wear sunglasses inside because, obviously.

Monday evening: Your friends are starting to get ready for night #2 and you're still trying to get yourself back together after last night. FOMO sets in and you manage to put on a dress and brush your hair. A feeble attempt to rally is made.

Tuesday afternoon: You're delirious and slap happy. You don't know how drained you are because your brain went on vacation. Night #3 is fast approaching and you're ready to go. Innocent and naive, you march on.

Wednesday afternoon: You catch a second wind and start to develop a system. Darty, nap, eat, rally. Night #4 ensues and sh*t gets really weird.

Thursday morning: Wake up in your little's dorm room. Shoes are nowhere to be found so you walk home barefoot. You take an exam in your 7:30 AM class and you have to keep one eye closed while reading the exam questions.

Thursday night: After a rough day of classes, you decide to take it easy tonight (as if that ever goes as planned). However, the night has other plans.

Friday afternoon: You should be dead but since it's Friday, you're happy. Somehow you manage to darty, nap, eat, and rally one more time. Maybe you're getting the hang of this.

Saturday morning: You barely find clean clothes to put on and you eat 11 Ritz crackers on top of McDonald's for breakfast. You don't really feel human anymore, but you know the show must go on.

Saturday night: PAINT, PAINT, PAINT. You rally HARD and clown with your pals one more time. And you guessed it, sh*t gets as weird as weird sh*t gets. At some point, you stop and look around to appreciate all the awesome people around you.

Sunday "morning": You wake up and roll out of bed around 2pm. Even then, you are barely able to function. You partied yourself stupid. You are totally out of clean laundry. GroupMe is blowing up with people recounting the highlights of the week.

While the lows of last week were as low as low can be, the highs were equally high. At many points throughout the week, I stopped to look around and appreciate this crazy tradition. Last week made me really appreciate Purdue and all the amazing friendships I've gained from it.

I'll never forget the day that someone told me these words: "Madison, I think you're a good friend to everyone but yourself." I stood there completely in awe of that statement. Now, I realize that you can't fully be there for other people unless you're there for yourself, too. You can't show up for others until you're willing to show up for yourself.

Here are five things everyone should learn in order to be a better friend to themselves. These steps are hard, but they're so worth it.
