7 Dates You've Probably Been On If You Go To BYU-I

It’s no secret that BYU-Idaho has an interesting dating culture. The university itself has been nicknamed BYU-“I do!” However, being on a small campus in a small town, it has been proven that it can be hard to be creative with dates. So here’s 7 dates you or your roommates have probably been on, whether you realize it or not.

1. The R Mountain Hike- An easy hike with a view of an oh-so-beautiful desert. (Not). Accompanying awkwardness is almost guaranteed. “Will he hold my hand? Should I just hold his?” “What if it’s too hot and I get all sweaty and gross?” “Hello, pit stains. How romantic.”

2. The Burg- A small burger joint with milkshakes that are to die for. Accompanied by a burger, this is a pretty good meal. Unless you’re on a first date and don’t want to be seen stuffing a juicy hamburger into your face.

3. The Devo Date- Every Tuesday, at 2:10 p.m., there is a huge campus wide devotional. They file into the I-Center just to hear a speaker give a talk. Some people even come dressed in their Sunday best to this event. And many will send a text Monday night saying, “Hey! Are you sitting by anyone for devo tomorrow?” Don’t pretend like you haven’t, because you probably have. And it was probably awkward trying to talk to your “devo date” while the speaker was trying to tell you something about your eternal salvation.

4. Temple Walk- Walking the temple grounds is quite the romantic and spiritual excursion. For couples wanting to contemplate life, or contemplate the spirituality of their date as a future marriage partner, this would be the perfect thing. If you’re into that.

5. Pizza Pie Café- This place is a gift from the heavens above. It’s a pizza buffet with every kind of pizza you could want—even dessert pizza. It makes for a perfect group date with friends. It’s especially fun to have eating contests, or to build a Jenga tower out of pizza crusts.

6. “Wanna watch a movie at my apartment?”- This question has been asked countless times, especially in the winter when there is not much to do around Rexburg. This question should probably be phrased something more like, “Hey wanna come over? We can put a movie on and this will just be an excuse for me to cuddle with you and hold your hand. And when my roommates leave, I might even kiss you. But I’ll probably tell you later that I’m actually not interested in you at all and all that was for nothing.”

7. Gardens- The gardens by the Rick’s building are nothing short of gorgeous. It’s a quiet place with lots of privacy. However, unless both people are horticulture majors, you’re probably not going to spend lots of time looking at plants, just a hunch. It’s a widely known fact that the Rick’s Gardens are the school’s best make out spot.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
